Be afraid, very afraid, legislation concerning oil disposal is an enormous issue. I note the advise to burn the oil, this is a complete no, no. To do so you must purchase a licence from environmental agency, and chances are that new applicants would not be successful or able to afford it.
Garages now generally pay to have someone take it away, in this day and age and it is also down to the garage to ensure that the company meets hazardous waste regulations failure to do so ends in enourmous fines.
The advise that it could end in legislation against road side repairs is very real, any one in doubt click on to a few German websites and see what has happened there.
Of couse it doesnt end there, the plastic can you purchase your oil in is considered hazardous waste as well and subject to all of the same regulations. Dont dump it in general waste. That brings us to the filter yet more expense and one more problem.
As a general rule most garages will dispose of it for you providing they supply the oil and the filter ask them when you purchase the parts, remember though they will undoubtably be subject to vigerous rules and regulatios hence the disposal charges so often found on invoices today.

My local tip in France has a container for waste engine oil, one for oil filters, one for veg oil waste and so on, including ones for paint, acids, bases etc etc.  They seem to be far more organised over there than we are here.

I'm constantly horrified by the recycling facilities in Sheff....

We get paper taken once a month (one of the little bins) thats it. Everything else we need to go ourselves, and then there's the huge traffic jam for the council tip.... Sad need to go soon and drain oil containers actually....
