cam belts are all dead easy  IF  you know how to lock off the engine. If you don't and something moves they turn into a pig of a job to sort out... and if it's your only car, and you need to .....

The most difficult belt I've ever done was on a quad cam v6, and the problem was getting the bleeding cam cover off - was about 6 hours worth of junk to get out of the way...

Once you've done one belt they are all pretty much the same, just mark every pulley, shaft, and lump on engine with a dab of paint so if things do move you can manually line back up again.

Smile

The Pug 405 was a real pig due to lack of space to see and work.   I looked like a serious case of self-harm after I'd done it first time.

I tend to mark, mark, and mark again.  I've had a manual look through the forums, as the search facility does not throw up that much, and there's a fair amount of help.

I just wanted to make sure that there was no "show-stopping" special tool.  Manufacturers are keen to discourage DIY work these days by whatever means.

Mine has done 172K - time for a new tensioner pulley, I wonder...?  Opinions seem to vary.

Mar 08 quoted £370 main dealer but got £215 HighQ - their book time was 2 hours - a bit short of the 5 it took!! The secret is to take the rad out! I also gave them  print out of the ITOK thread about timing belt relacement - thanks for that!!

First attempt they were not quite spot on and there was a bit of a 'rattle'. Next day a minor adjustment got the timing spot on and she's runs sweet as ever at 120000 miles. By the way, even smoother since I switched to biodiesel from recycled oil - better mpg too.

I'm quite prepared to tackle most jobs but timing belts are a 'make or break' item - no room for error here as you can trash the engine so bite the bullet and pay for it to be done ... but shop around.

On the same subject - any idea how to reset the timing belt warning light on the dash now it has been replaced???
