I originally posted a version of this under the Gearbox Forum and it was suggested that I should also post it here.

My Monterey 1999 Petrol 3.2 V6 Automatic LTD with LPG conversion and 140,000 miles on the clock began to suffer from intermittent hard shifting.  After a few weeks, a heavy transmission leak became apparent. I knew that the gearbox had been rebuilt a few months before I bought the car and hadn't expected problems.

I spoke to various mechanics, garages and engineers who all took a sharp intake of breath before making their various pronouncements as to what they thought was the problem, together with their likely costs to resolve the problem.

Google came up with The Automatic Gearbox Company, based near Manchester.  They were about to open (on 2nd of April this year) a new workshop just outside Derby and very close to where I live. After describing the problem over the phone, Rob their engineer immediately diagnosed the problem as being a broken drive plate and possible damaged seal and bearing on the torque convertor. He even gave me a ball park figure for a repair and said that they might even have a courtesy car available.

I was told that the work would take a week. In the end it took four, because the drive plate had to come from Opel in Germany as Isuzu did not carry this part in the UK anymore. A new drive plate, seals and bearing, together with a remanufactured torque convertor were all fitted and I was shown all the old bits.  Pity that Isuzu don't use a cush drive on the drive plate like Ford does.

Anyhow, if anyone needs auto gearbox work, these guys are experts and my car is now 'silky smooth' again.

For all other work (engine and electrics) try J&D Auto in Derby, run by two ex-Isuzu guys.  Very clued up they are too!

Also, I have just had (4/01/08) an intermittent electrical fault fixed by Dennis Jennings, Auto Electrician, 8 Back Sitwell Street, Derby, DE1 2JX.  He was very efficient and his charges are reasonable.  His contact number is 07971 398 228.  The problem was with the indicators and only occurred when the lights (side or main) were also switched on.  Then both indicators flashed although at different brightnesses.  The left hand one flashed at twice the normal speed.

This guy was recommended by Kerry from Kerry's Radiators in Derby, DE3 9GJ, another good contact.
