i recently acquired this machine it originated in northern ireland and its original lump was replaced with a 3.1td engine, however its first start of the morning is a nightmare ,my suspicion is heater plugs or timer as there is no light illuminating on the dash,so as i am unfamiliar with this engine A where are the heater plugs located and B is it a garage job to change these or can i do it myself as im fairly technical.

The heater plugs on a 3.1 are located in a row on the passenger side of the head.  If its an intercooled engine then remove the cooler and the inlet pipes from the air filter to turbo.  Undo the top of the plugs that hold the metal contact strip on and remove and replace one by one like spark plugs.  They can seize into the head so a good plan is to give them a squirt of penetrating oil like Plus Gas (not WD40!) the day before and agian when you start the job.  It took me about an hour to do mine.  Given the engine transplant I'd get a meter on them first to make sure they're receiving any current as it may be that however fitted it didn't wire them up.

I would check to see if you have voltage at the glow plugs with a voltmeter, it should read about 11v.

Also check where the wire attaches to the rail that is attached to the glow plugs, it can rust.

It could be fuel, if you have a hole in the fuel line somewhere (very common) over night the fuel may drain back into the tank, try cracking the bleed nut on the lift pump and drawing up fuel fist thing before you try to start it. See if that helps the starting problem.

its a funny thing! when things arent wired in they tend not to function.
i fixed a wire to the heater plug rail nut and stuck the other end on the battery positive  for 10 secs approx and it started 2nd turn of the key so im going to wire it up to heat off a switch

Make sure you put a BIG relay in that circuit.

Auto electrics are huge strength Wink

I'd personally put at least a 35 amp relay in for the glow plugs.
