Smile Hello all
A siple question?
what are we (or i) supposed to do with my old engine oil ?? there is no recycleing plant within a reasonable disstance from me, my nighbour says "paint the fence with it steve" but i don't think the wife, kids or the dogs would like that very much, so i declined his idea, i don't want to be "anti-green" by simply putting it in the general waste wheeli-bin, in a pop bottle, but what else am i to do, HELP???????????????????????????????????

many thanks for the info, i have now found a site( from the link) to recycle my old engine oil, UNFORTUNATLY it is 11 miles away i can't help but feel that the c##p i wil pump into the atmos- using my car ,is worse than NOT taking my old oil to the recycling plant in the first place Confused and it's not a place that i pass that ofton, or at all come to that, i'll hang on to it for a while, and maybe i can give it away to somone, who wants to paint there fence!!

Dispose of it properly, don't just whizz it in the rubbish where it ends up in landfill and will leak to pollute the ground water and poison someones kids........If its that much of an effort to dispose of it properly then either pay someone else to change your oil or save it up in an old five gallon container until you have enough to justify a special trip.  If home mechainics aren't responsible we'll end up being legislated out of our hobby by government like they've pretty much done with painting cars at home.

Shocked
a bit far feched, but i get  your point, and i know plenty of lads who do their own paint spraying, goverment policies and all well and good, do this, don't do that, but when it comes to policing such ideas, well its a sham at best, no my friend, all we mortals need worry about is, paying your council tax and NOT commitiing a criminal offence and the law will leave you pretty much alone. This is not fantasy, the government has looked at ways to stop home mechanics in the recent past, it may already have come in in some EU countries.  Chucking old oil into landfill is irresponsible and yes it does get into groundwater, used engine oil is full of carcinogens and is very unpleasant stuff, hence the fact that most professional mechanics now wear gloves.  This is precisely why councils provide the facilities to dispose of it properly.  Be responsible and don't give our hobby a bad name.

As Philip says, PLEASE PLEASE dispose of oil in the correct fashon.

I've a few 20l containers (if you've not got any look around the back of fast food places, the tin ones which oil comes in are perfect), fill em up, store them round the back of the shed, and once very few months pop down to your local council tip and put them in the oil containers.

If your stuck for one in Barnsley, there's a few over here in sheff which take oil...

What USED to be a great thing was painting your chassis with it!! It works! You will always find the car with the worst oil leaks has a mint undercarriage!
