My 92 3.1TD Bighorn seems to always glow for the same length of time no matter what the outside temp.  As well, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to when the fast warm up button speeds the idle up.  I'm wondering if the temp sensor for my glow plug system is not working properly?  Any suggestions are apprecited.

Thanks

When it's the first start of the day, mine always glows for the same time.  When the engine has been warmed though the glow time reduces.  Avoid using the fast warm switch, it closes a butterfly valve in the exhaust pipe, roughly below the front seats, and this can tend to stick shut causing all sorts of problems.  It doesn't speed the idle up, just makes the engine work harder.  Idle speed is increased by winding up the little knob with the choke symbol on it (next to steering column - just to the left of column on mine which is RHD).  All this does is pull on a cable attached to the throttle pedal.  Make sure you wind it back off befor setting off though!

Pressing the fast warm up speeds up the engine?  Err sounds like your running with it on !! The fast warm up slows the engine down about 250 rpm on mine, the light is on when the warm up is off if that makes sence.

The engine revs rise if the heater is over 1/2 way though.

Are you sure DX?  Shocked  My fast warm up light comes on when the thing is switched on, it only comes on if the engine is cold and the outside temp is below 10 degrees C.

I thought that the light was to indcate that teh warm up could be switched on? Closing the valve in the exhaust would limit the flow causing the engine to work harder and the revs to drop ???

Or have I been driving with the warm up switch on for the last year? Switch light goes off if the temp raises, indicating that it can't be switch on I though?

If the switch is pressed (in the on position) the light will come on to say that the fast warm up has been activated.  Light goes off and opens valve again once up to temp.  With button out the light will be off all the time - no fast warm up selected.

Shocked

That's odd, mine works how I said, which is how it's described in the owner's handbook.

Confused

I haven't used mine since folk started reporting that it was a bad idea with valves getting stuck etc, but when I did, I never got any smoke, it just seemed a little gutless and sluggish and used loads of fuel.  If you're saying in one of the other posts you're only getting 17mpg, it may be the case that yours is on.  I only get mileage that bad when I'm towing the caravan, and even then it's not quite that low.

Do you have shares in BP or something?  Laughing

My switch is a push to make/push to break type, not a rocker.  Has a picture of an engine on it and a rectangular green LED.  Press it once and it locks in and if it's cold enough the LED comes on and you can hear the servos closing the valves.  Press it again and switch pops out, LED goes off, valves open etc.

Ah you've a mk1?

The MU is the same - push to make the light come on and cold engine start engage...  The mk2 has a rocker switch by the gear stick, again, push forward should make the light come on I would have though - I bet I've been driving with the cold start on - bought it like that and didn't come with a handbook.....

Nope, mine's a mk2 1994 3.1 lotus bighorn.

Switch is on dash, just to the right of the steering column, near the headlight squirters, fog light switches, heated/folding mirror switches etc.

If I unplug the switch I take it that will leave it off?
