Hi Guys
I need some help, my 95 bighorn goes like a train untill i tow my caravan, on the flat, exceeding the speed limit is easy (1.8 ton van) but i lose a lot of speed uphill, the box hunts unless i turn the overdrive off and saturday i was down to 45 at some points coming up from devon.
What i need is to tune or chip the engine, but i can't find anyone who does it, 165bhp would be nice, any ideas?
Thanks
Denisch. |

i dont think you can chip a 95 trooper, to mechanical. what sort of hill are we talking about? windy hill on the m62? or a short sharp incline? 45mph up some hills isnt that bad if your weighing off at 3tonnes.........is your g/box changing out off overdrive soon enough to keep the torque going?
and what do you mean when you say the box hunts? |

What about just moving the selector into 2 and rembering that it's a 13 year old 4be4
Hill's will take it out of a truck when towing, 1.8 tonne plus all your kit (200kg?) plus 2 kids (50kg each), plus 2 adults (100kg each) that's 300kg more, plus a 2.2 tonne vehicle, that's 5 1/2 tonne?
It's a lot of weight to be dragging up a hill _________________ For great insurance deals on 4x4s, imports and more, contact Adrian Flux :

thanks guy's
hunting is the box hunting through the gears, i reckon your right, a 4 ton set up doin 45 up 'windy hill' ain't that bad, but the dam box shifting in and out of overdrive when on the flat on the motorway drives you mad, it would be a bit much to drive all the way from devon with the overdrive off just because you are towing, by all accounts the 3.1 does'nt have a lot of BHP and a few more would help when towing.
As for the weight, 1.8 is the van, max, plus two adults (big ones) and luggage gives just over 4 tons, guess i'll have to get into the habit of knockin the o/d off when approaching a hill.

I think that overdrive is for when the going it good to switch on. If the going aint so good then leave off?
Might be worth knocking it down if you are getting to a hill or something? _________________ For great insurance deals on 4x4s, imports and more, contact Adrian Flux :

Correct me if i'm wrong but i think pre 1995 troops are 110bhp and post are 115bhp (3.1's)
The autobox will also take more powering compared to the manual _________________ 2011 3.0l Hilux Invincible

I thought they were around 115. find mine doesn't like hills with mt's on and have to drop a cog on long or steep inclines (manual) and thats not towing!!
i've adjusted fueling now and increased boost a bit and have plans for a straight through exhaust. you could go down the front mount intercooler route etc for a bit of extra power but sounds like with the combined weight your pulling it wouldn't make a massive difference until you unhitch _________________ landcruiser 80 series 4.5, 35's/33's for road, 2inch lift, discreet winch, sliders/armour, factory lockers, stainless side exit +++++ |

I think maybe moglite (correct me if i'm wrong) and i know matski has it in the pipeline. I had thought about it but mine's just an off roader and it'll only get clogged up so left it up top. Would think just a case of bolt one in and route some pipe work, might have to cut some metal out. _________________ landcruiser 80 series 4.5, 35's/33's for road, 2inch lift, discreet winch, sliders/armour, factory lockers, stainless side exit +++++ |
