Just sussing whether my new 1999 3.0TD neeeds anything doing like new glow plugs etc

Iyt takes a couple of seconds turning the engine before it cracks and I thought all modern engines cracked instantly if running properly (I do wait for the glow symbol).

It took more than a couple of seconds this morning being very cold, so if it needs sorting I wan't to do it now, as I got they recon starting is were most wear occurs.

Service history says glow plugs were done about 15K ago, acouple of years ago I think.

I am used to modern golf tdis etc, so maybe this is just normal???

I think you will find it's the norm with the 3.0 to take a little longer than most as it has to build up oil pressure to power the injectors(or something like that) the 3.0 boy's will explain better soon but yes it's normal..

mine usually takes about 2-3 seconds for it to start, this is due to the oil pressure building up to fire the injectors, its normal on these engines to take a few seconds to start

I've only had my 3.0 DT Troop for a few weeks and compared to my VW T4 (1996) and Audi A4 (2003), it's starting behaviour is rather "old-fashioned."  There are plenty of posts about using the right engine oil - 40 quid's worth of fresh, decent quality 5w30 fully synthetic is required as the ECU won't allow the engine to start until the oil powered injector rail is up to pressure.  Warm weather, cold weather, rain or shine, it doesn't appear to make much difference.  Hopefully, it won't chew starter motors like my Scrote 1.6D van used to.

Despite seeming to crank for an absolute age (maybe 3 seconds), there is no black smoke out the back, so it obviously isn't burning anything as it cranks.

Patience is a virtue, apparently.
