I have a 3.1 98 Bighorn which has become harder to start and then this morning will not run at all.
I noticed that when I pumped the primer there was quite a bit of air in the diesel. The starter turns over and all of the electrics seem to be ok. After reading the other threads I am leaning towards the fuel lines on top of the tank being corroded which I will check tomorrow. One other thing that I did notice was that when I did pump the primer that instead of the pump staying hard, it would gradually lose resistance as I pushed it. Is this normal? Should I be concentrating on the lines between the fuel filter and the tank?
Also is there anything else I should check.
Appreciate the help.

Thanks

I'd start with your initial thought about the fuel tank output lines being corroded. Had the same problem, tried the same as you have ,same result. Are you finding it slowing to a stall when its idling? Local workshop for diesel injection brazed a new outlet pipe to the sender unit in the fuel tank, replaced the fuel lines with flexi hoses and no problems since bar the bank balance. If you can take on the fuel tank drop yourself would be worth a look.

Ok here is an update on what I have done so far. Ran fuel hose from fuel can into the fuel filter, primed the line and left the outlet hose connected to the injector. The hose from the fuel can did seem to loose a bit of pressure but I was still unable to start  the engine. So am I right in thinking that I can now rule out the possibility of air entering the system from the tank end of the fuel line? and if so are there any other checks that I should try.

Thanks

Well the corroded fuel lines are very common over here, both my 3.1's have had your symptoms and turned out to be fuel lines/tank. It's very rare to have any other starting problems Rolling Eyes  (apart from flat battery).

The hand primers can be a little unreliable, on one of my 3.1's i had to pressurise the fuel tank (slightly) with compressed air to get the fuel throught when i changed the filter (this may show any leaks Wink )
