Hi mate

Had a dozen large koi and lost most of them while on
holiday in cornwall three year,s ago,we think something to do with weather.
We were 300 miles away with our daughter ringing us every day to say
there were more fish dying. Sad

Not nice as it took about three years to get them to that size and in good condition,
lost interest for a while but building them up again now.

Got a 8x12 pond with koi ghost carp gold fish ect,it's interesting,relaxing
and great fun trying to hit a heron with a brick at thirty paces.
I like all birds and wild life but not when there eating my fish Twisted Evil

Just on with building my new pond at the mo.
13' x10' . Can't decide weather to make it 4' deep or 6' deep.
Been told the deeper the better, obviousley so the fish can hide in natural suroundings.

Wife got me into it Rolling Eyes

Glad she did though cause they really are magnificent to watch. So elegant and relaxing.
She bought me a Gin Rin for my birthday 5 years ago. It was 6-8'' long.
Now it has grown to just under 2 foot in length with a girth of about 6-7'' deep.
Don't know what there like with chips though Laughing

Thought that myself.
Also thought of digging 2' and raising 3' Idea

Cause when you go to these kio speciaists and the holding tanks are raised up, the fish don't seem to be as frightened as when they see your whole shadow looking down at them in a low pond.
Also when the pond is half and half it is easier to set up a good gravity filter system.

my dad used to keep them had a 16' x 8' by 6' deep fibre glass pond built with seperate 3 stage fiter tank they llooked great he had a 2ft white koi that wud come up and let you stroke its belly Laughing

the others wud feed out of your hand ...felt like they were going to suck ya figers off but over the winter a couple of winters the filter pipes broke and every time we had to dig uot yhe pond to fix them which was a pain so the last time it happened he called it a day and sold his fiah Sad

The koi must be right on the limits of their temperature range in England - in NZ it is illegal to keep koi, or even think about returning any part of one to the water after it's been caught.

In the area I live some escaped a few years ago from an experimental pond - they totally destroy the river habitat once they get loose.
