Hi Folks,

What is the easiest way of creating a forum online? The missus has webspace for the Guide unit she runs and wishes to have a private forum so the guides can chat about events etc ....

I have a basic knowledge of webspace, ftp and frontpage... but its only basic.

Any ideas??

It's dead easy to set up a phpbb - I can do one from scratch in about 5 mins (aint that right 666 Very HappyVery Happy)

You need a server with SQL, create a database - record the details (login name, password, database name...) drag the phpbb folder to the server, run the installation process, then delete a couple of files...

Bingo one forum - it's literally that easy.

You NEED to have access to a server with SQL (any version) and PHP installed - all of it is free software.

Is it your sever or a hosted one? If it's hosted have a look on their homepage and the package you've got and it'll say if pho and sql are provided. If it's your own server - just install them.

Looks like that's Demon (in a round about kinda way), so it'll either be windows or linux servers which are doing the hosting (your choice). The difference packages will have different applications installed - the cheap cheap one having nothing but webspace, and pay a little more and then server technologies will be added.

You'll need to speak to your guy with the host, but I'd be supprised if it didn't have php and sql - the only issue is the amount of concurrent databases which you can have on the host - a decent package and there won't be an issue - a cheapie and there might be a limit (every individiaul forum requires 1 database)

Your guy should be able to tell you about the above though....

Depends how you log onto a server - if you do it like I presume you do Mark, then it's a user friendly web interface? With buttons for the applications??

If you log in over telnet or ssh then all your going to get it a black screen with #/user/home/...  coming up as text, and if it's windows you might only get an ftp session window.

All depends on what your logging into, how it's set up, and what the back end is.
