take the stat out clean rad and stat
test stat if it opens at the temp that is stamped on the stat no problem but for extra try this
get a drill bit hss 4.0 or 4.5 drill 2 holes in the inner ring
doing this will help water circulation
once you have done this and replaced the stat and hose etc open heater vents inside the cab put heat on hot pour a pint in to rad start engine let it tick over the add your anti freeze and water once this has reached the top o the rad and over flows go to the cab and lift the revs to slightly watching the water on top of tghe rad heat should slowly build in the heater matrix then add more water etc

explaining this is hard doing it is easy

I have drilled two holes and it runs too cold around town. Not very good for the engine IMO

strange
i used to work in a garage and once apone a time have my own bussiness and i must have done thousands o thermostats in my time and never had any complaints or any problems
the only thing i think you might have done wrong is drilled a hole that is too BIG

there is no need to be drilling holes in the stats for the 3.0l they have a jiggle pin in them already so the coolant can flow and the air can escape, they are known though for going wrong so just fit a new one if it still over heats and as you have already had a new rad i would start looking at gaskets or a cracked head.

It's a long shot but could you have had a an air lock hence cold heater and overheating and when you removed the stat you freed the air lock, i have had this before but not on an isuzu Rolling Eyes

i would say that this does sound like a possable reason. i have had this on other motors as well and it was indeed an air lock
