Jonnie, a quick tip for bleeding - start the engine and as soons as it picks up, bring the revs up to 3K or so, if there's any air, it'll die, but there should be enough momentum in the engine to self bleed.  Make sure you give the manual primer pump a good few squirts first till it goes hard though.

Having similar problems with our 1997 R reg 3.1

Yesterday morning, low on fuel, truck started trying to cut out at low revs / idle, when approaching junctions etc.    Filled up with fuel, and no better.   Fine when driving normally, although possibly a bit down on power, however every time approaching a junction it was trying to cut out.

Replaced the fuel filter with a genuine part, and it is still the same.   I am not a mechanic, although can do the basics!   When I replaced the filter, following the instructions, opened the air bleed screw and pumped the priming pump (for ages), and no fuel came through.   Decided to start the engine - started fine, but ran a bit rough and wouldn't rev, then cut out.   Started again, very reluctantly, with LOTS of smoke, white, black and every colour in between!   Switched off, bled again, and fuel came through.   Closed bleed valve and pumped again, but still didn't start well, and slowly dying at idle.   Priming pump NEVER goes hard (even before the change of pump) - I guess there is an air leak somewhere - I wonder whether one of the pipes could have perished - the top of the outlet pipe from the filter looks like it has some cracks on the top edge.

Could this be the problem?   Anyone have any ideas where to start looking?   Could it be more serious - i.e. fuel pump?

Thanks,

Alastair

Hi,

Thanks for getting back to me!   Took our Trooper to a local '4x4 specialist' to have a look at, they said the metal pipes coming out of the tank were rotted away, and as they were part of the tank, the tank must be replaced.   They ordered one and didn't get round to fitting it all week, so I have now moved it down the road to the Isuzu main dealer, complete with new tank in the boot!   They actually quoted the same price, within about £10 of the small local garage!   Tried to get a second hand tank from a breakers, but they told me that they have to drill holes in all fuel tanks due to 'Health and Safety'.  Rolling Eyes
