Yup,
Low range 4wd and feet off the pedals also steer as little as possible, if its steep enough and you touch the brake the front end could slide round causing a roll over, same goes for over steering.
Follow those simple rules and its a doddle  Very Happy

Cover the accelerator at all times. If you start to lock up (gear to low) then accelerate slightly to regain traction. It's against everything youve learnt so far, but it'll stop you flipping over and rolling.

Sorry but I have driven 4x4's for over 20yrs and would never use the throttle on a steep decent, it will quickly turn a slow moving controlable slip (that will stay controlable if you stay calm) into a bobsliegh  Shocked

That's against every possible bit of advise I've ever read about hill decents then and also been in when a vehicle decides to slide.

Take it you have not driven a really steep long slope then, you blip that throttle and you speed up, back off and the skid gets worse, what would you do keep giving it more ????

Must say I have had to blip the throttle to regain a front end slide when reversing down a hill in snow after a failed climb. It immediately regained control and was needed every ten yards or so when the front started to slew round. Better to go a bit faster and be able to steer than slowly and roll.

Not a problem in ruts of course.

One of the first things I was told and it saved me from a big problem Confused

Lay off the off roading will ya, I'd prefer to go to a birthday than a funeral.

I'm not arguing, I know what is the right thing to do and have never lost control, apart from when a front hub gave out on a reeeealy steep long hill (brown trowser time) but thats another story  Laughing

I agree, it's not an argument, when decneding a hill, 4 low, all feet off pedals and cover the throttle incase of a wheel locking up, then gently accelerate out of it till traction is regained, then back off gently until engine braking takes over. Any other way introduces, 1/ potential roll over 2/ poential mechanical failure, so yeah, there is only 1 safe way of decending hills off road Wink
