The main difference externally is the position of the gear sticks. 3.1s have a remote linkage set-up on top of the box. You can mix and match Trooper engines onto whichever 'box you've got in, but not the other way round without cutting and welding the tunnel.

Right, so bell housings and input are all the same, it's the position of the box in the car which changes.

And the 3.1 box has a flange for the prop. The 2.8 is a push in fitting for the prop.

thats all you need to do to get round that if your fitting a 3.1 engine and box into a newer vehicle or vice versa is to swap the back end of the transfer box i.e the casing which allows the appropriate prop to fit.

Physically the gearboxes are identical in size

Ive a 2.8 and 3.1 side by side in the garage ill take a snap and if someone could post it it would help i guess

Think I get the picture, basically was assuming I had to do the following

1. Lose the spacer between the engine and box
2. Do something with the gearbox xmember or mount as it is now 2" too far back
3. Fit Trooper front prop
4. Do something with rear prop

The rear prop should be no problem, had to have a Frontera prop shortened when I fitted the Trooper rear axle so might get away with std 2.8 Frontera rear prop.

Gonna fit a Trooper front axle anyway as I have an Aussie locker ready to fit

Coolio

Rear prop isn't a problem. fitting a Trooper rear axle meant I had to shorten the std Frontera prop, so all things being equal taking the spacer out should enable the use of a std Frontera prop Idea

The gearbox mounting tip is a gem tho Very Happy  Very Happy

If anyone needs any prop work doing, I use a place called BARPropshafts in Neath, highly recommended, they have probably done several hundred shortened props for me over the years, generally turn them round in 24hrs.
