Obviously this is Matski's area of expertise....  Laughing

Anybody else into digital photography? Reason I ask is I have recently picked up a Canon EOS450D (with standard 18-55mm lens) and wondered if anybody has suggestions for lenses? I have been looking at an 18-200 Sigma lens as to replace the standard lens from Canon as an everyday lens that should cover most jobs... but as im a newbie to all this has anybody else any suggestions?

I use a 40D and when I got my first DSLR I used the kit lens for a while to see what I wanted to take shots of, I'm in to wildlife photography and I found I wanted more reach all the time so got a longer telephoto, what are you mostly taking shots of?
The Sigma your looking at is a good all round choice but you might find you want a wider angle or more reach and then end up with other lenses that overlap this one, on the other hand you wont be changing the lens all the time so that's a bonus to, the only thing I would say is it might not be to good indoors at the longer end due to it being F3.5 - 6.5, the good thing about lenses is that they hold there value well and you can always sell them on eebuygum and not lose much.
A good website to check is Camerapricebuster to check for prices etc.

My subjects are likely to be wide and varied from landscapes & outdoors type stuff as a leisure/hobby thru to theatrical shows, fashion shows and people for work. Over time I will probably end up with a collection of lenses... im looking now for something to get me on for a year or so while I learn how to use the camera  Laughing

I would say to go for one like the Sigma you linked then and maybe get a 50mm f1.8 for the indoor stuff, it only costs about £60 but is an excellent lens for using indoor and for portrait etc.

Yeah, I just bought a 24-70 f2.8 for a grand (tic). Frightening when you are wandering around a cross country course with over £10,000 hanging off your shoulders.

This is a lens I have lusted for, after using one on loan for a job, but it wouldn't pay for it's self in my field. My 80-200 AFS F2.8 is my most expensive lens, but the one I use all the time. It's also seven years old now so owes me nothing!

Good glass makes more difference than a good camera, fact.

Ive been wanting to order a 100-400 L lens but cant make my mind up over a couple of options, waiting for Christmas to be over with now before I get one I think, specially since my exhaust started blowing and rattling today.

I would be very careful of a zoom covering such a big range as that. More range means less quality. Now a 200-400....

Is an 18-200 stretching things then? Should I be looking for a 70-200 instead?

It really depends on the quality of the lens, also the price is a mine field as well, if you start looking at the 70-200's you will probably be spending twice as much as you intended, I have been using a 70-300 IS lens for a couple of years and it is excellent, im only thinking of changing because I want a bit more reach and im falling into the trap of thinking about it to much which is making me want one more even if I don't really need it.

I think you have to weigh up the benefits of the wide range over the loss in quality, another one to look at will be the 55-250 IS apparently it is really good and quite cheap but you will probably want something wider to go with it, have a look at POTN they have reviews and examples of shots from most of the lenses.

Matski: the range is something thats stopped me getting one before, it is an excellent wildlife lens used by pros and people on safari etc  so im not to worried about quality issues but Ive also been looking at the 400 L because I might just end up only shooting at the long end anyway and its cheaper but I just cant decide.

The Canon 70-200 f4 is supposed to be a good lens, cheaper and less bulky than the f2.8 lens. It really depends on price v quality v usability. The bigger lenses are heavy and cumbersome.

I would love a small "one size fits all" lense for laning, when quality doesn't matter so much.

The 70-200 is very nice, my dad got me to order one for him of the net and I didn't want to give it to him when it arrived.
