|
|
My 2002 3.0 has recently developed an intermittent starting sound which I can only describe as a rattle or knocking of the engine, It happens just as the engine fires and then it runs fine and the sound goes away, its only once failed to start (cut out just after starting) but then started on the second attempt.
I have found that the exhaust is blowing and that it makes a bit of a rattle but dont think the 2 are connected as the engine sound is much deeper, I checked the oil and it shows as half way between the 2 markers on the dip stick and ive not had any warning lights etc, im not much of a mechanic so dont know if these things are relevant, im sure it never used to make this sound anyone have any ideas? |

It could be a failing glow plug and the cold weather is making it show its colours.
But I'm no 3.0 expert _________________ |

mine rattled like buggery and it turned out to be the egr opening and shutting all the time _________________ atb kevin

Egr isnt disconnected, it doesnt happen every time but it seems like it is happening more often than not, annoyed with myself now as I was at the dealers today but didnt think to ask them about it at the time. |

It could be the exhaust, it might be tapping against the chassis or body when the engine first fires as the engine shakes lots when first starting up

I havent noticed any smoke but it rus a bit rough just after it starts but once im on my way it drives fine, I had just put that down to the cold weather though so it might not be connected. |

Ok I just went out and started her up, started fine, bit noisy and there was a bit of white smoke if I revved the engine, havent noticed this before as I usually just drive of the drive and don't look behind me, I dont think there was enough to be noticeable from inside when on the move either and it stopped after a couple of minutes, is that bad? |

mine will occasionally put a bit of white smoke out when its cold, would have thought it was the glow plugs, the tractors at work do the same _________________ atb kevin

I did a search and found some threads reg the white smoke and don't think mine did it excessively and it was still quite cold outside and I could see my breath the same way so im not to worried about it, my dad came round and he thinks im just paranoid and it just sounds like a diesel engine, hope I dont look to stupid on Tuesday if they cant find anything wrong. |

Well the garage diagnosed the dual mass flywheel as being at fault, had it booked in for Monday to be replaced under the warranty but it broke down on Saturday after towing a horse box full of hay back from a farm I parked up for an hour then went out to do an errand for the wife and the flywheel came apart 5 minutes down the road, it was nice of it to hold together until after I had finished towing and was far enough away from home for the AA to give me a tow to the garage.
Got it back Monday night and its all fine now with no funny noise when starting. |
