Is there a somthing simple I can check out myself or does it need to go to the dealers?

the most common thing on these is the 4wd motor on the back of the gearbox

There can be a number of problems, faulty transfer box switch, vsv's, actuator (may be sticking), vacuum failure, 4x4 computer.

A simple test to check if the axle actuator is shifting from 2wd to 4wd is to jack the front so that both wheels are of the ground, with engine running in 2wd, spin one of the front wheels (the other side wheel should not turn) select 4wd turn one of the front wheels, the other side should turn if all is working correctly.

no vacuum on the rodeo it's all electric the only real test is to replace it.
also the front has a seperate motor so it may well engage but the gearbox might not

Oh right, but at least if he performs the test I mentioned he will no if its the axle actuator or the transfer box. I have heard the electric actuators rust inside causing them to jam.

I have had the truck on a 2 post ramp so that all the wheels are free. I can only get the rear wheels to spin.

That sounds like a transfer box problem then.

you can't get parts for the motor it comes as a unit you just unbolt it from the box and bolt the new one on. has it put the fault light on on the dash not the check engine one but the 4wd one?
