Hi can anyone recommend a good Isuzu specialist garage in the East Mids around the Notts/Derby border ?

Like so many others of you I have real starting problems in the cold with my 3.0TDi Trooper Duty and have so far replaced both batteries and had a new alternator.

Couldn't start it one frosty morning in November so got RAC out. Bloke checked it and told me the alternator had packed up so I got a new one from Milners at Matlock & had it fitted by a local garage. Within about 2 to 3 weeks both batteries were flat & I couldn't start it again. RAC came out again and got it jump started with no problem - he checked the alternator and both batteries and said that the volts were around 10.5 on one battery and about 12 on the other one and about the same on the alternator. I took both batteries off and fully charged them o his recommendation and it started great for a while. This cold spell means its again struggling to start and batteries are about flat. Even if I'm not using the heater, lights or wipers, the meter on the dash still only reads about 10.5 while driving but on the odd occassion will go up to about 13.5. It cranks for ages when trying to start it when it's cold but when it's started it runs fine after a minute or two.

Any help would be appreciated and a good garage locally would be a great help too...!! Aplogies for my lack of technical knowlwdge but fixing cars really isn't my thing..!!

Fed up with this car costing me money and wish I'd had another Mitsubishi which never went wrong in the 5 years I owned it. Only had this 9 months and its cost me over £2k in repairs so far.... Evil or Very Mad Very disappointed and wish I'd seen this website before I bought it and wouldn't have bothered then. Can't afford to keep pumping money into it they way I am doing.......

Cheers for your help folks..!!
Bev.

I can see why you may not be impressed with Isuzu but they do make a good engines as many a Hitachi  machine owner will tell you.
So if you have had two new batterys and and a new alternator then it will be an easy fix like the blue relay in the engine fuse box or  a current drain when the car is parked up. Duff  alarm ,door not shut  ,radio on .
A good  3.0 Trooper engine will start in 2 - 3 (4 if lazy ) turns of the engine  (Its true  ! u 3.1, 2.8  indirect injection  lot are just miffy , Chris , Eithan ! elp ) -  whatever the weather and give no trouble so I would guess that you have some other fault .If you have to wind the engine over for a time to make it go (drains the batterys down) and only do local runs then the the alternator wont  have time charge up the batterys fully. You say if you charge them its ok .
I am no expert on this engine  but somebody, somewhere  is pulling your chain as to what is wrong  from what you have posted.
More information please.

Ok Check you have the correct oil in it - it must be 5w30 any thicker and you will have problems.

You could have issues with you High pressure oil sensor as the 3.0 will not fire the injectors until the oil pressure is high enough

The sensors are cheap enough but I believe you really need them coding by dealer using Tech2.

The only Isuzu garages I know of are Chandlers in Belton (not really notts/derby border) and there is one in Beeston in notts - The name escapes me at the moment

The biggest issue with the 3.0 is that if there is anything iffy you need a tech2 and that is main dealer only and alot of people spend money with non dealers or poor dealers and end up costing them an arm and a leg

If you can manage it there is also Cotswolds Isuzu they are very good and if you give them a call you could arrange a trip down and get them to take a look

Tim

there's been bad reports about milners alternators of late. them not lasting very long.
The battery's could be knackered, not holding their charge. have you checked the 'water' in them?

It sounds like a charging problem to me also,

Are the belts worn  Question

Are the belts slipping/ start the engine from cold run it for 2-3 minutes is there any squealing  coming from the belts

Stop the engine and feel the alternator pulley {be careful} If its very hot your belts are slipping {after 2-3 mins running}

Fit new belts

another slow starting fault is the injector plug filling with oil, its the big multi pin plug next tot the dipstick tube, pull it apart and if its got oil in it, a quick wash with wd40 will put it right

i would go for the blue relay first tho and take it from there,

Hi All,

Thanks very much for the suggestions and help.

Gribble - in the last couple of weeks (probably since the new alternator has been fitted) there is an intermittent clicking noise coming from the fuse box in the footwell. On inspection it seems like one of the relays but can't tell which one it's coming from - is that where the blue relay is ? Which one is it and can I change it myself ? Seems to do the clicking mostly (a continual clicking for a few seconds) when I put it in reverse or sometimes when I have my foot on the brake for more than a second or two, also sometimes if I put the steering on full lock although these might be a coincidence. I do about 25 miles a day split into 4 journies but hasn't been a problem until recently. If I can't do the blue relay myself, any idea how much I should be paying and would it have to be coded on Tech2, hence main dealer ?

TimBanham - The oil is definitely 5w30 - it was the first thing I had done when I bought the car, along with new oil filters. It was done in March and has done around 10k since them - should it be done again ? The garage in Beeston is Willoughby Garages and have moved down the road into Nottingham. Anyone got any feedback on them price and service -wise ?

KGoodwin - Both the new batteries are supposed to be maintenance free - do they still need the water checking in them even though they are only weeks old ? Both seem to hold their charge ok when not on the car and the first one I had was tested by the RAC man when he came out....

Fletch - It had all new belts put on when I first had it cos it had the oil leak from hell that knackered all the belts. There isn't any squealing coming from any of them but I will check the tension on the alternator pully, bearing in mind the new alternator is slightly smaller than the old one......

Rallymarshall - I'll have a look at the injector plug at the weekend now I know where to find it - I think Laughing

Richard Wilkinson - Will get the garage that fitted alternator to check it for me - RAC man did say it looked smaller that the original and that it was running at about 11 to 12 volts unless engine was running at over 2,000 revs - think I'll dig the alternator receipt out ready....   Confused

If anyone else has any suggestions I'd appreciate them as sooner or later one or more will be right..!!

Thanks again for the help,
Bev.x

Bev

Oil and Filters should be changed at least every 6K miles

Willoughby Garages - They haven't a clue - I went them initially and they were just not interested

Ah ok  well the three relays by your feet are ; heater and a/c ,power windows and the rear demister .The flasher relay is also there and any clicking down there is a good sign that the volts are a bit low .
I would think you have a duff alternator or one of too low an output to cope  with demand -  90 or 100 amps is the original isuzu spec .Reading your reply  its running the batteries down .
Get the garage   Razz to check it with  a meter for volts and a clip on ammeter for amp output ,easy tests about ten mins max .
The blue relay is under the bonnet in the fuse box drivers side and its just a pull out plug in one  -  Laughing no dealer required !

Hi,

Tim - Ok will get oil & filters changes to see if it helps. I've also heard that Willoughby aren't very good - do you take yours over to Cotswolds now ?

Gribble - Yay, glad I can change the relay myself - already spent a fortune on labour with the other stuff that's been wrong with it - I assume that the 'blue relay' is blue in colour  Laughing  ? Can I get one from any garage or just from dealers and do I ask for a 'blue relay'? Sorry for all the dim questions but I want to at least go half knowing what I'm asking for as been down the road of being ripped off by a garage before.....

Cheers gentlemen !!!

Bev

Took mine to Chandlers when I needed major work doing as I couldn't get down to Cotswolds - they were not too bad - just check any up front spending!

Yes it a blue one in colour  but would think its Isuzu only so just ask for the blue charge relay that sits in the engine bay fuse box or pull it out and put it on the parts counter .It only fits in one way so you cant go wrong just like a mains plug on say  like that thing on a stick  that makes a din and cleans carpets . Laughing
You could get it from milners , be the same thing and cheaper.
Has just been pointed out to me that milners 3.0 Trooper  alternator is only 70amps  Confused you need 90 amps according to the isuzu specs  Shocked
that means your batteries are making up the  20 amps  difference so they would  go down on power over a period of time .
Best way forward is to get the right spec alternator fitted by a autoelectric place or buy one of eebuygum Surprised  or similar and get it put on , some on there new for about £100
