|
|
I bought this dinghy from Chris the other day for Fishing and family trips up the river. I thought just for the laugh I might as well do a build thread
So...
The GRP hull is in good overall shape with a few patches where the gel coat and outer layer glass had come away, namely on the keel and a big hole just above the skeg. The gunwale rails have had it and the transom needs some wood, also the bench seat needs hanging when the new gunwale rails are fitted.
Here is the boat as I got it.
And here showing the damaged areas ground out and filled with an excellent fiberglass filler from plastic padding. The skeg needed quite a lot of repairing but is now solid.
With the damaged areas all filled and sanded, I put a key on the whole thing and rolled on some Oxford Blue 2 pac paint that my dad had left over.
Particularly pleased with the rebuilt skeg with paint on.
I drilled a hole in the bottom...
...To fit a drain plug.
Insides looking very grubby, so I striped the old wood and center seat out and washed it out. Still looks manky though!
So I lashed on a couple of coats of masonry paint.
I wanted gray but could only get poncy warm colours so plumped for white. Could be a bit bright on a sunny day though! I will keep my eye out for a nice aircraft gray I think.
Shows the trailer up now _________________ Front Aussie Locker - Rear LSD - Petrol Diffs

Looking good.
Just needs a nice outboard on the back now.
This is a little beauty I was out sailing on a few weekend ago,

Doesn't need any filler, just some new wooden rails glassed in underneath (where it sits on the pick-up bed) and it could do with rubbing down and a coat of paint. _________________ Phil

I have a 1950s Seagull 40 Plus to go on. I am also looking at an electric trolling motor too. _________________ Front Aussie Locker - Rear LSD - Petrol Diffs

I would love to say yes, but the answer in its my grandads. We do go out alot though and love been at the helm.
Who knows - "inheritance" maybe!!!!!
Great feeling though been out at sea, shame I am in the Midlands and not closer to the sea though to get out more often. _________________ Rodeo Denver 3litre 2004 - SOLD

We had a dinghy with a seagull on it when I was in the venture scouts. I loved the instruction to run it at full throttle all the time (mind you, you wouldn't have got anywhere otherwise!) _________________ Phil

Probably knacked then, they are famous for being torquey little pushers! They don't pump water well at idle so that would be why they said to keep it going. _________________ Front Aussie Locker - Rear LSD - Petrol Diffs

Managed to find some time to do a bit on the boat!
So I had a go at starting the seagull. Of course it didn't go, so had a look and there was no spark. Cleaned the points and away she went first pull! Not bad for a 1950s engine!
The white paint was too bright so mixed in some blue to tone down the glare and ended up with this slightly dodgy colour! Still it will cut down on the head aches when fishing. Then bent up some strip with a heat gun for the gunwale rails, sandwiched the transom with two sheets of exterior ply, cut fillets out of an old hardwood door to triangulate the whole affair and provide mounting points for cleats then filled the gaps with wood filler too finish it off.
Getting there! _________________ Front Aussie Locker - Rear LSD - Petrol Diffs
