|
|
i have an old maxcom cb in my truck that i was given it works fine communicating at short distances (about a mile or so)
although i can pick up ppl from further away on a good day...i'm presuming thats down to my aerial..its just a short rubbish old mag mount....i want to replace aerial and just wondered what to get for better reception...i am on a bit of a budget but a decent aerial shouldn't be that much ????...want to stick with mag mounted one as i take it of after every trip.. _________________ LTM NO.41 |

i see chris b is on at mo so i'm sure he'll have some advice giving the profession he's in _________________ LTM NO.41 |

The swr on the twig you have now is probably way out, the springers are not the best for coverage but they are the best for the job and come pre-tuned, a new mag mount would also be a good idea as an arial is only as good as its connection to the rig.
I got the short one which in real terms is not as good as the long one but it doesnt twang about, I think you will notice a massive difference compared to the one you have now.
When I was a lad I had a rig in my bedroom that ran of an old car battery and a mag mounted DV27 on a biscuit tin, I was lucky to get to the end of the street _________________ |

nout wrong with the old dv27, apart from them snapping when you hit low branches
cracking aerials in their time, used to have 1 on me mk1 cavalier and with a 25 watt burner i could hit stafford at 30+ from oswestry _________________ atb kevin

North wales is easy from here with a standard rig, thats like 50 miles?
But back in cb's hayday you was lucky to get off the estate unless you had a 22ft silver rod strapped to the chimney.
I have a 12ft boomerang in the back garden at the moment _________________ |

If your voltage standing wave ratio at the antenna feedpoint is wrong, you end up with a reflected signal along the outside of the antenna cable.
Modern transceivers are equipped with "self-protection" so when this unwanted reflection of energy goes back into the rig ... the power output stage reduces from
4 watts to 0.4 watts.
That sort of difference would halve your range ... you would still receive pretty much the same as before, its just your transmitted output that gets mullered.
All i'm saying is "G7TFL" _________________ .

mmmm a Ham
Funny thing is, I was going to get a SWR meter but had flashbacks to the 80's and decided to trust the pre-tuned twig.
All in all its great _________________ |

Ex ham ... passed the two exams in 1991, was "on air" from 1992-2005.
Basically got fed up with the old geezers who used to spoil it for us young 'uns.
The sort of old geezers who regularly used the legal limit of 400watts just to talk
to the guy in the next county, but would deliberatly ignore people running less
than a watt in the next town!!
B.T.W ... i will be fitting a 27mhz rig in my isuzu soon, but i'll be using my rear window
demister as the antenna (done it before using de-coupling capacitors). _________________ .
