hi got this e-mail 2day...

For the Isuzu Trooper/Bighorn we do a Optimisation. The reason for this, is that the injection pump is mechanical and not electrical, and therefore the is nothing for the SmartBox to connect to. The Optimisation is a job carried out on the pump by adjusting certain screws inside the pump.

The price for this £385 including VAT, and is carried out here at our workshop in Crowthorne. We would require your vehicle for 3-4 hours for this operation, and about 3-4 days notice is all we need if you would like us to carry this out for you.

cheers ian

Ian,
Thanks for the inf. that's very interesting.
I have heard snippets about this company before on here before.
When they say Trooper do they mean the MK1?
If you decided to go ahead with this then let us know how you get on.
Regards Martin

i've done my last 2 troopers & my frontera 2.8 myself, much nicer to drive, turbo seems to cut in at lower revs & you get less lag/more instant grunt !! mpg about the same, defitnately no worse.

Shaun, Any chance of some more detail as to what you've done? In my previous incarnation as a Land Rover fanatic, I saw a thread on the Land Rover Enthusiast forum which is now enshrined in their tech pages giving the how to do this for the Bosch injection setup that the 200 TDi & 300 TDi Land Rover motors have. Anyone know what sort of pumps Isuzus have & would it be a similar procedure?
The Land Rover article is http://www.lrenthusiastforum.com/ubbthreads/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=LR_technical&Number=91564&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=
An article about adjusting Bosch VE pumps is here http://dodgeram.org/tech/dsl/more_power/Power_ve.htm

the isuzu pump is very similar to the bosch in the way it is adjusted. its best to see what sort of emmission your vehicle is giving out before you adjust it, i took my fronty for mot last week, the emmision's where only 0.4 the limit is 3.5 so i decided there was room for adjustment. at the rear of the pump towards the engine (next to the fuel shut off solenoid) is the adjusting screw. it looks like a tappet adjuster (screw with a lock nut), if it has'nt been messed with it'll have a tin cap to stop you messing. remove this cap (awkward) then turn screw in(clockwise) 1/4 to 1/2 a turn. i tried half a turn, then with the engine warm roadtest & give it some full throttle whilst looking in nearside mirror, if after a couple of tries its chucking loads of black smoke turn screw back a small amount until its almost clear. then adjust the tickover. if you don't wanna mess about just turn screw in 1/4 turn in the beginning it should be still slightly weak(no smoke). you'll feel the difference straight away. good look !

if you look on the dodgeram link, the screw is in exactly the same place as the screw labelled power screw. don't bother about the bit where it says full power/diaphragm as it just makes extra smoke ! just adjust the power screw then the tickover speed, get engine hot first so you can roadtest & adjust.

yes the later "computer controlled" systems are much easy to get more power, we've just got the ole spanner jobs ! saying that theres only 1 wire going to the pump to make the engine run - as they say - the simple ideas are the best !

its my frontera with isuzu 2.8 engine, in the frontera the engine has a larger turbo from the 3.1 trooper & a front mounted intercooler which is more efficient than top mounted. i get 28/30 mpg round town with my tools on (rear suspension just off the bump stops !).

It sounds like a very expensive tune-up, the DERV Doctor in Derbyshire does this for £120 (optimising fuel pump etc) www.thedervdoctor.co.uk

Tried it this weekend on my 3.1. Would be easier with smaller tools, hands and more space in the engine bay!

Awkward was not the words I used getting the tin cover off, eventually split it with a small srewdriver/chisel and peeled it away with fine pliers. I guess I don't need it now! 10mm lock nut came undone easily and just twisted the long screw in 1/4 turn and locked it off again. Reduced the tickover, pig to get to at the front of the pump, adjusting the cam return movement as there isn't much play even with small spanners.

So far impressions excellent, more pull, smoother gear changes and better kick down - less noise more power. No adverse smoke so I'll see how the fuel consumption goes on this tank and may tweak it again.

Many thanks to Shaungriff.
