I have to share this with somebody.

If, like me, you find yourself in the position of NOT having a brand new, or under-3-years-old car then you might spend what? a good 50 years of MOT tests in your lifetime, sitting in the obligatory 'viewing area' and worrying away at your sanity.

And for a very good reason, you fail the MOT, you lose the use of the car (thank goodness for the 13 month rule).

Now, I've only had my '94 Trooper for about 2 and a half years, and in that time I've put it through 2 MOT's. I'm not going to say it's passed every time, because it's failed on both occasions, but it's always small things like yesterdays 1x number plate bulb and a rear shock absorber. Funny that I hadn't changed the shock as I was waiting to add it to a list of longer faults - that never, of course, transpired.

Oh, so the rear bumper lights are a little loose and their rear housing boxes are rusted to tissue paper. The chassis gets a little thinner with the passage of time and needs to be kept flake-free to stop the retention of moisture. The steering box sprung a leak earlier this year, a rear brake shoe got thrown, and the heat shield rattles on the exhaust making the neighbours twitch the curtains muttering the words "pikeys" under their breath.

And if I bought a new little hatchback under the governments new scrappage scheme? Would THAT last 15 years?

I'd like to think so but for now, the Trooper is my no.1
