Got the truck home yesterday. Bumper / winch mounts looking very butch.
Just got to get some good weather and get stuck into the next phase... _________________ Cheers

Been busy.
A mate made me 2 new outriggers for under the front footwells - the old ones were well gone.
I cut one off (with a butter knife...) and he made me a pair, cranked for the chassis taper and everything - amazing work:
I have one welded on (learned to MIG as I went, not too bad) and have the other offered up and ready to weld next dry spare time.
Started chassis and underside waxoyling.
Doing body patching as I go too.
Tyres (33"x12.50"x15" Hankook RT03 M/T) are amazing looking. Need to add rubber matting arch extenders to pass MOT and I'm not sure they'll articulate but we'll wait and see.
one big, one small.
Also sorted some of the electrics gremlins and done my ice upgrades - the old speakers (where present, not all of them were) had seen better days:
Done the EGR Blanking and cold start valve removal

So I think it is time for a proper update.
The good news is that Tonka is on the road at long last - nearly a year after I got him.
The list of works and jobs done is seemingly endless, but here's a first stab at it (and I'll no doubt add to this as I remember things I have missed out!)
> 1.5" Body lift from Milners
> 2 new +2" Pro-Comp ES-9000 shocks at front (rears sitting ready for fitting as soon as I lift the springs at the rear) - one of the original fronts was snapped in two!
> New fabricated front chassis cross member, bumper and Southdown-type removeable winch / recovery points - also meant new anti-roll-bar mounts fabricated
> New fabricated frontcentre (behind front wheels) 2x chassis / body outriggers - welded in my me, made up by a good friend who is frankly now my hero
> Rear outrigger patched and repaired
> New body mount bushes at front end
> 4x CV boots and CV joint strip-down and re-build / lube
> Replaced missing front bump-stop
> 4x new ball joints
> Strip and rebuild / lube auto locking front hubs
> Lots of waxoyl
> Removed cold start flap valve in exhaust
> Blanked EGR valves on engine
> Full service - 3 filters, flush, injector cleaner (x2), oil, drive belts, Timing Belt and tensioner and idler
> Batteries deep charged and re-acided
> Stereo wiring totally re-laid and various upgrades installed. All new speakers, lots of details you'd need to see in the flesh
> 15"x8" Alloys fitted with Hankook RT03 M/T tyres: 15" x 12.5" wide x 33" tall
> Number plate light rotted out and so replaced with 2 independantly fed LED strips
> Headlight harness upgrade, Xenon 90% upgrade bulbs fitted, lights set for MOT
> All glass behind the driver limo tinted (DIY)
> Red LED load area lighting
> Rot in rear door opening area / sills / rear quarters repaired (mix of welding, steel patches, rivited patches and filler)
> Stone guard applied up to coach line (black)
> Rear bumper trimmed as body lift pulled it out of line and one side had rotted mounts anyway
> Grip tape installed at load area opening
> Barn door lock-open stay installed as was missing completely
> Car polished and waxed
> Wiper arms all removed and re-satin blacked before having upgrade blades fitted
> Bad earth in front indicators repaired
> All badging removed and 'Tonka' badging installed on smaller rear barn door, front doors and bonnet
> Cooling system flushed and filled with new coolant mix
> Car scheduled to go into Isuzu for Ceramic heater wiring recall
> Front torsion bars cranked up 1.5" (I think) - looks ok until you fully load it and fill the tank, then it squats at the rear. Needs new +2" rear coils anyway. On list.
> Rust in various places stopped and painted over
> Arial fitted, although it is terrible, I might change it again
> Replaced torn rear seat belt
> Interior valeted and carpets wet cleaned, seats power washed
> Timing belt light reset
> Beer bottle opener installed in load area
Next on the list are new rear coils, that recall work, fotting rear pro-comps, front wheel bearings, some guages (boost for starters), 12v oulets to rear, Custom bashplate and sump protection, getting the windows all working and the passenger door leccys running properly, some more polishing (I'd like to cut the car back and bring it up to the best I can possibly get it to), big bore exhaust system to let that turbo breathe better, lifting the diff and gearbox breathers up a bit, roof rack fabrication, fogs and spots, aux work lighting, new batteries and if I can find an easy way to get better MPG, I'll gladly do that too.
When doing the timing belt last weekend, after racking up a few hundred miles after MOT, we were locking up the timing prior to removing the old belt. We had one of the 2 M8 bolts in, and it seemed a wee bit out due to stretch in the old belt. We were cranking the engine a very slight bit by hand to line up the other bolt hole when...SNAP. The old belt (which may well be over 5 years old) broke. You just don't get any closer than that.
This is why you need to go out and take off the inner arch liners and clean out the crus before lashing waxoly everywhere: horrible rot happs if you don't:
Got it out and used it for family day out duties:
Drives like a dream. Makes all other 4x4s seem tiny including D4 discos and RRs. Makes this X5 look like a toy:
At the MOT:
I hate it when you park you car and then upon return to the car park, you cannot see where you left it:
A massive thanks to all who have helped me out. Mark for making the outriggers, Andy for making the front end and Gavin for loaning me his MIG welder. _________________ Cheers

Nice job mate you've put a lot of work in, time to enjoy iy now
just a question.... the front bumper, are you fitting a winch in the gap or closing it in a bit? Rad looks a bit exposed for off road use. _________________ landcruiser 80 series 4.5, 35's/33's for road, 2inch lift, discreet winch, sliders/armour, factory lockers, stainless side exit +++++ |

The pin mounts take a removable winch like this:
They are a standard jigged fit that lots of our club use so winches are shareable.
Behind it and going back under the car I am indeed planning grille / bash plate / sump protection but as it'll be all custom fabricated, I'll be only doing very gentle off roading for now. Certainly, no bushwhacking as a pointy stick could puncture the rad easily. _________________ Cheers

Nice one, good idea. I took my armour right back to under the transfer box so it covers the important bits, I found a few holes big enough to get a jet wash in were good for cleaning mud out and they let water out easier if driven deep water.
It's coming along nicely though and well done on all the effort. _________________ landcruiser 80 series 4.5, 35's/33's for road, 2inch lift, discreet winch, sliders/armour, factory lockers, stainless side exit +++++ |
