they both bolt straight up,the bellhousing connector plate has to be removed from the 3.0 engine and swapped with the one from the 2.8 or 3.1,its just bolted to the block(not sure if you would even have to with the 3.1)the clutch and duel mass flywheel from the 3.0 then bolts straight onto the 2.8 or 3.1(same bolt pattern)and everything works as it did with your 3.0. i went for the 2.8 as i had a tf pickup with that engine and i didnt have to lift the bonnet, also i picked up a mot failure 2.8 frontera for 200 quid which was cheaper than an engine to buy, plus you get to see it running.you dont have to be a mechanic,as long as you can use a spanner it is easy enough done.

the top bellhousing bolts were the worst part of the conversion,i ended up bending the neck on a ring spanner and using that,a series of extensions can be used over the top of the gearbox too,but you need an extra pair of hands to guide it on and hold on the nut(remember take off the slave cylinder too).once you have the engine out,do all the jobs i have mentioned on this thread before fitting as it will save loads of time.the release bearing needs clipped onto the clutch assembly before refitting engine, then it clips onto the clutch fork when engine mates to gearbox, its clear to see when you remove the 3.0.mind connect a wire to the fuel pump stop solenoid when engine is out as this is a nightmare when engine is in,make it a few feet long to connect to your desired ignition live(i used the wiper motor feed in engine bay)also change over the oil pressure switches from 3.0 to 3.1 while engine is out and it will plug back in to the loom and work as normal. good luck and anything i can help you with, just ask.cheers bryan

if you look back the threads on this post, there is a guide of everything i did, including the alternator wiring.it is simple enough, only 1 of the two from the 3.0 alt plug needs used to put the dash lights on and make the alt charge.thanks bryan
