Over  the last couple of weeks one of my rear wheel bearings has started making enough noise for me to have to replace it.   I have never ever had to do a rear one on any motor I've owned, but to be fair, she has done nearly 100,000 miles, several of them in deep mud  Rolling Eyes,.............. and it has been rumbling away quietly for about 2 years  Rolling Eyes  Laughing .

Anyway, I was just wondering if anyone knows if there are any pitfalls to be avoided. ( like not doing it on a narrow driveway  Laughing  Laughing ), or if anyone has any snippets of wisdom they could share  Cool . The pdf manual is a tad vague on the subject to put it mildly, in fact it only shows one oil seal, and there are two in the kit.

Not wishing to be a harbinger of doom, assuming its the same as earlier 3.1's, isn't the bearing pressed onto the halfshaft 'hot' at the factory, and a pig to get off 'cold' at a later date?  Confused

I'm sure PhilP has experience of this, although the MK4 might be different *crosses fingers*

Oh I hope not  Shocked . It does have a separate retainer, and a circlip behind that.

Its the retainer thats put on hot and theres no other way of getting it off other than butchering it with whatever sharp/blunt instrument that comes to hand.  Took four hours of swearing to get mine off and some scars where the grinder slipped to the shaft that I ended up welding up and grinding smooth again.  The retainer then has to be dropped on hot in one go before it cools after the bearing has been slid on.  The abd retainer was main dealer only and very pricey.  I'll see if I can find my old thread for the price.

Here you go  £132 + VAT for an abs bearing retainer, £18 for the non abs one from milners!

Well the kit I've got from Milners has the bearing, 2 oil seals and a retainer in it. But if it needs heat, and I presume a certain ammount of accuracy, then I may just have a word with my trusted garage guy.

If you've got abs then the milners kit won't work as the abs trigger wheel is on the bearing retainer.  Main dealer only.

Well, I've just been to see Dave at the garage, and he says he has done a few of these. He has all the right gear for the job, and he's quoted me £45 so it's booked in for monday morning.

What surprised me was when one of the lads checked on the computer to see what the allotted time should be it said 0.9hrs.
I'd be amazed if anyone can do that job in less than an hour  Shocked
