Trooper is in this morning for an MoT after six months sat off the road (mainly because we could get away with just the one car for a bit) I'm just sticking it in as is and we'll see what it fails on if anything and deal with it then.  Fingers crossed!

Bum! Fail.............

Rear brake pipe corroded
Front disks excessively pitted
N/S rear brake disk excessivley pitted (annoying as they aren't that old)
Rear brakes uneven (probably just a sticky caliper as both are less than three years old)
Headlight aim
Rear number plate degraded.

I'm guessing the disks are due to it standing around for six months and the *beep* is they'd probably clean up with a couple of hundred miles use rather than the two miles to the MoT station but these days you're between a rock and a hard place when the ticket has expired.  We're thinking about just getting the garage to sort it and retest it, at least that way I should save the fifity quid retest fee f I don't get it fixed in time plus I hate messing with brakes, it goes back to a dody incident with an alfasud many years ago and is a bit of a phobia for me.

Got it booked in to the garage next thursday, I'm probably gonna do the rear disks myself as they're dead easy, give the rear calipers a good clean and lube, get the number plate sorted and then leave the brake pipes, front disks and lights for them to do.  Gonna order disks and pads from Milners as they seem to be the cheapest around unless anyone can point me to anyone cheaper?  Fronts £24 each, rears £18.50 pads £14 and £16 a set.  The garage reckoned that wwas cheaper than they can get them.

The second box arrived today and it has clearly been opened, the pads were out of their box so I've complained to Milners.  That said I decided to treat myself to two new fitting kits as I've been using the same anti-rattle springs since I bought it and they were getting a bit tired last time I changed pads.  I even bought some proper silicone grease for the slider pins as I've been finding that coppergrease gets claggy after a while.

Done the rear disks, the nearside caliper was horribly stiff hence the uneven braking so a good cleanup and proper silicone brake grease and its in and out like a fiddlers elbow.  New disks are on and looking shiny.  I'm keeping the old ones and will get them skimmed as spares.  Its going in to the garage tomorrow who are going to do the fronts and the brake pipes and just check the balance and headlight aim in which which I've refitted the bulb properly, new number plate is on.

Then its back to the MoT station for a retest, the garage its going to are also MoT testers but they don't test diesels.

The garage doing the work reckon they can't see any duff brake pipes that they as MoT testers would fail it on so they are ringing the tester for clarification.  The main front to back ones were a bit on the filthy side but they reckon as soon as you rub the mud off they are nice and shiny underneath.  I would have taken it to the garage doing the work for a test but last time I called them they didn't do diesels but they do now, they reckon they wouldn't have failed it on the disks either so I could probably have gotten away with just cleaning up the calipers.  Still, it should stop on a sixpence now as it has new disks and pads all round and nice slidy calipers.

It's in the manual.  "In the opinion of the tester".  Some testers are obsessed with brakes some lights.

Lights are usually clear cut. Dipped, main and sidelights. All indicators. Rear lights, brake lights, number plate lights, and one fog on the drivers side. You also have to have a working reflector on the rear on both sides in red.

Anything else is a bonus (including reversing light)
