hi i just brought a V reg 1999 Trooper 3.0 commercial.
it will not idle most of the time when you stop, at lights etc, it just cuts out !! sometimes it is then hard to start, (as if its a flooded petrol engine)
does this make sense to anyone ???????
my mechanic is looking deep and has found some issues but is still puzzled, poss timing is out.
If you have any help it would be greatful thanks

Your mechanic will be puzzled as the timing cant be out and he will have never worked on an engine like it, dont let him touch it, wait for the 3.0 guys on here _________________ |

It wont start cos cam and flywheel sensors are out of sync...Most likely cause is Oil Rail Pressure Sensor.....tho what oil is in it MUST be 5/30 FULLY synthetic......
Is this problem when engine up to temp or cold as well ? _________________ Khotso........... |

it starts ok with just turn of key, then as you pull up sharp it dies on you and when you turn the key it just turns overlike a flooded engine, then it will catch and tick over ok but if you try to put your foot down it acts like a flooded engine again, ticking on about 200rpm. Then it will adjust and run as if nothing wrong.
If you pull up steady and push clutch in slowly it will tick on 1000rpm.
mechanic is sure timing was out, found a leak on head gasket now so gonig to have skim and seal done and adjust timing manually as he replaces head.

Oil pickup pipe seals... pulling a bit of air then purging

PS...Have a good look thru "Engine" and "Starting Issues" on here,,,good insight as to how the 4JX1 engine works and problems/fixes.......Unless your mechanic is familiar with this engine I'm afraid he is going to struggle,and I know for a fact that the demise of more than one 4JX1 engine has been down to the fact that people did not know what they were dealing with.. _________________ Khotso........... |

sounds like the oil rail pressure sensor if it won't rev up,
as above re the timing if it's out it won't start at all and your not supposed to skim the heads due to the sleeves it has that the injectors sit in.
does it die if you hit the clutch pedal hard? if so try a new crank sensor and if that doesn't work theres to much end float in the crank so worn crank/thrust bearings |

ok im not the best mechanic just a gas fitter
thanks for replies, the oil rail thing was loose one end, now to be stripped and rebuilt.
the head is now off as a glow plug was broke in it. we have drilled it out and tomorrow it will be retapped and should seal in properly again.
we have drilled all but the thread, so the tap will take out a spring of thread, the plug should then push out ok.
these chaps are so confident, ones an ex tutor of mechanics.
will post update when done, or not.

drilling out the glow plug worked a treat, the tap went straight in and took out the spring of thread new one now fitted.
head going back on tomorrow after an acid bath to clean ports.
head cant be skimmed
oil rail has new o-rings, cleaned and ready to go on.
the injectors were slightly under torqued, this may be the problem of the oil, diesel mixture problems according to the tutor.
lets see when its all running on saturday.

under torqued injectors won't mix diesel and oil, they will leak diesel in to the cylinders and leak combustion pressure past the copper seal though which will give you a hesitation/missfire symptom on the road
diesel in the oil comes from either bad injectors internally or the injector isn't sat properly in the sleeve pulling it to one side allowing the o ring to leak or the head itself is porous which is quite common on the 3.0l or the outer injector sleeve o rings most likely the top one are flat or hard.
fingers crossed it has sorted it but if the injectors are above the cutoff point then i would think it's either head or sleeves |

we are just outside huntingdon, i will ask him if he wants his contact put on here before i do it.
the timing was out for one, with the head off the they could see it did not line properly, head going back on now. its had a bath of some sort of cleaner and looks like new.
all the valves are fine and best news for me, the drilling worked a treat and the new plug fits perfect.
should be back together tonight, ready for last works tomorrow and test drive monday
