Hi
My front hub on the passenger side keeps popping off and subsequently my drive shaft starts to retract out of the hub, if i look underneath at the cv boot there is a gap of about an inch or so

Ive had it with my mechanic twice to put the circlip back on and now I want to know if there is a underlying problem causing this to happen.

It seems a very flimsy way of locking the drive shaft in can the circlip not be replaced with a 8mm bolt and washer?

Any info appreciated

I would put a new circlip on. It has to be weak.

If the c-clip has been fitted correctly it should not come off.

It is possible to 'think' that it is fitted.

It should slot completely 'home' in it's groove. When it is, it should rotate easily when pushed with a probe.

P.S. to 'reveal' the c-clip groove, ensure that the drive-shaft spline is fully extended into the hub.

What size and where do you get the circlips?

Given up on my mechanic he shrugging shoulders and scratching head cant understand whats going on .....

I trying a different mechanic I know see what he reckons.

I am wondering if theres an underlying CV joint problem causing this to happen?

If , and its only an If - the steering stops broken off or out of spec the hub can go too far round  so the c/v joint runs out of travel and the circlip gets pinged off as its not meant to hold the hub back .

It could also be that the splines have worn tapered so under power the shaft tries to go in from the collar so the whole thrust is on the clip .

I had the same problem a while back.
I got some new circlips.  The groove looked a bit dodgey to me, so I got my dremel fitted with a thin cutting disc and cleaned up the groove a little ( made it a bit deeper too) Fitted the new circlips and not had a problem since.

I made a puller to screw into the centre threaded hole that enabled me to get the driveshaft fully home before attempting to fit the new  clips/.   ..made from an old 1/2" drive  socket / big washer / 8mm set screw.

Oh well here we go again....

Had my mechanic take a look he cant see any problems related to this so he puts new clips on (tuesday)

I drive to school today and notice the tell tale steering wheel shake take a look and theres the 1 inch gap between the boot and the hub the clips off again!!!

Grrrrr I have sworn so much today £80 out of pocket over this and still no cure or clues as to what is causing it

I feel your pain  Sad

Can you post a pic of how/where the mechanic is fitting the c-clip?

Also a pic of the other side would be useful.

I rekon one of the CV's is on the way out and locking up instead of sliding so it pops the clip off .

could be the bearing that the back of driveshaft sits in to the hub, if you can waggle driveshaft into hub from the back thats a likely cause

I assume that you are also fitting the right thickness of shims behind the circlip. If not the play in the cv shaft will ping it off.
