Just been through the dreaded MOT experience again.
But another good year for my old 2.8, only failed on the
handbrake and 2 bulbs.
The Handbrake has always been a pain in the ????.

Joe,
Glad to hear there are still a few of us left.
My 2.8 is going in soon as well.
Been looking at the hand brake on mine recently as it hasn't worked for ages.
What I found is their are 5 seperate hand brake cables from lever to caliper, and would you believe both sides leading to the caliper have seized.
So I'm changing them this weekend along with two new calipers, pads and two new disks.
My only worry MOT wise is emmissions as I don't know to much about diesels.
It passed ok last year so fingers crossed.

Mine failed earlier this year on you guessed it......handbrake (oh and rotten sills and rotten front body crossmember under the rad) some welding and a new caliper and she's still going strong. The only thing about the emissions is the do have to rev the nuts off it so if you think your cambelt may be past it's best I'd think about getting it changed and maybe running a bottle of injector cleaner through the thing before it goes in.

Phil,
Whilst putting all my new bits on on Saturday I discovered a small hole in one side of the sills underneath. It's not very big, but I don't have enough time now to deal with it. Apart from that the body an chassis are in pretty good nick considering the age.

I stuck some new wheels and tyres on it as well, standard size.
It might be my imagination but I swear they are outside the wheel arches just. I do hope not.

Mine failed as the back end of the sills were pretty rotten for about six inches and although they're not really structural they were within the right distance of a body mount. I just had em bodged with some patches, not awfully pretty but solid and hell, the next owner is likely to be a scrapyard anyway.

I have standard sized tyres on Shogun alloys which I think have a touch more offset and they also look like they're proud of the arches but they passed the MoT.

Phil,
Well it's MOT time tomorrow, the day of reconing Smile
I've not been able to think of much else now for ages.
I'd rather go to the dentist than have an MOT.

I've splashed out a lot of cash lately for parts, so I'm hoping that I don't have to spend anymore.

I take my vehicle to an MOT centre that does not have a garage attached that way they don't fail it to give a garage business.

Many years ago, I had a 1968 VW camper and it was falling apart.
I took it to an MOT centre who's garage specialised in welding.

According to them it needed a plate welded for my MOT and cost me about £40.00 and it passed.

Every old car that went through them "needed a plate welded" for a pass, from what I could see.

Well I'm keeping my fingers crossed for tomorrow.

Very Happy I'm legal again for another year. Very Happy

It sailed through with an advice notice to have look at one my sills.
Which isn't a problem.
I am releived.

For those who have seen my site, it was going to be a failure, gaurenteed!
But, rot aside, it the only 2 other things he failed on was an offside front outer cv boot, and the fogs dont work (my fault, welded thro the cable!!)
So not all bad.
Did half the job myself, and took it to a garage to be finished off (welding).
He gives great mileage 40+ MPG (2.8TD) but really needs an intercooler, for extra power.
No interior, only fronts seats, bought to commute to work and abuse off road,
just turned round 100k.
Just a shame these things suffer with all the rot!
Any body any ideas how I can post pics on here?
show u all the finished job!!

If you want to embed a pic in a post just copy the bit under the picture in photo bucket tha says IMG and paste it into your post, like this.

Yours has gone in exactly the same places as mine but my holes weren't quite as big!
