|

Hello there people,
I am quite new to off roading, after only having my trooper for 18 months or so now. I have been enjoying the whole off road experience and I want to get up to speed with some of my friends so I can do basic things.
I have been invited to go off over dartmoor, but I want to keep in touch with the others, so my good wife has bought me a cb. Now dont get me wrong, I know absolutly nothing about cb or amateur radio at all.
She bought me a tti tcb-550, I must say it is a tiny set, is it any good or relativly idiot proof?
Would someone be able to clarify some points?
What is the difference between cb, ham & 446mhz?
SWR meter, some sort of test equipment?
When using cb equip, do you have to register with some amatuer radio body?
Am I likely to damage my cb equip if I just plug it all together and try it, I read somewhere that if the kit is not properly 'tuned' it can cause damage?
What is a 'twig', 'burner', 'rig', 'base station'?
I do not understand the whole fequency thing, what is legal, supposed to use and not?
Thanks in advance for your replies _________________

To talk to friends it has to be 27mhz FM, you should have 27/81 printed on the front, with modern ariels/twigs they are pretuned and as long as you dont cut anything down it will be fine.
446 is PMR, normally used by kids as toys (those cheap 8 channel things)
A burner is an amplifier that boosts you output
BTW, that unit/rig looks like a US import on AM not FM _________________ |

Ahh, Many thanks for your replies.
Here is the manufacturers website. It is fm/am, but I cannot find 27/81 stamped on it anywhere, albeit it says on the website features '26.965 MHz to 27.405 MHz'. So I take it this is ok?
I am only telling you half the story, I have ordered a 3' springer, a 'hatch mount & cable and a quick release thingy from 4x4cb.com to go with it. I wanted to have a small aerial so I still lane with ease (without ripping it off), im not too fussed about getting miles & miles of range, just so I can talk to the chap in front or behind.
Does this look like an ok beginners outfit?
I would speak with the chap who Im going to go laning with, but he is on holiday just now. So before I start using tthis kit, will I need to register with anyone so I can legally use it, is there a proper way of doing it?
And finally does anyone have some links or recommendations of books to read on the whole lingo thing? I remember as a teenager listening to a friend of the family using cb, to me this sounded most 'un cool' and tbh a bit sad, saying that as a teenager most stuff was not cool! (sorry if i have offended anyone ), but I genuinly did not have a clue at what he was on about. _________________

oh my god, what have i started?!
I have been building a sub box that goes down the RH side of the truck over the wheel arch (to attempt to not take up too much room), and I have fed my aeriel cable along inside the box. I wanted to have a socket at the tailgate end of my box so I could plug a short length of cable that will go to the whippy.
Has anyone got any suggestions of a good plug and soket I could use for such a job, or even it is a good idea, will it affect my range by much?
Many thanks. _________________

Here are some images of my new creation. I must say that the sub works quite well, it was only a cheap 8" one from e bay.
I made some handy little storeage pockets on the top.
I was looking for a socket to mount onto the rear of my box, and plug a short length of cable in, and to the aerial. I want to be able to remove everything from the outside with relative ease, if I want to.
Does anyone have any suggestions of a plug & socket to do the job?
To mount here \/

hello chap,
i use a tti in the truck and its not a bad unit.
the short springer is a great twig and practically unbreakable, the only weak point will be your mount.
i would use a pl259, its the same that is on the end of your co-ax. have a look at kights electocoms site kcb.co.uk dougie is a great bloke and will give yo loads of advice.
you shouldnt loose any range if you stick an extension from your box to the rig, dougie will be able to make you the right thing for the job RODGEOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
dont worry about the lingo if only using for laning.
you used to have to have a licence but you dont anymore, just plug in and chat.
hope this helps
