Hi is this the same procedure for a 3.1 '94 bighorn? My heater only blows luke warmish so would this be a blocked matrix? The two pipes that go through the firewall felt 'crunchy' when i squashed them between my fingers. Maybe theyre full of sludge. Any ideas? Thanks all matt

Hi all, it seems like I am going to have to replace my heater matrix. Thanks all for the helpful info on this subject.I just wish I could see the photos that have been posted.I don't really understand this photo bucket problem ?. Before I start to remove my dash, can anyone confirm that this is definitely my problem.Symptoms are when putting on the heater, I can smell antifreeze very strong, and it even puts a grease film on the wind screen which then mists up very quickly. If I then switch on the fan,it blows a fog , smelling of antifreeze into the cab. If any one has any guidance or advice I would be very grateful. 4jx1 3litre manual gear box 2002.Hoping this cant be as fiddley as when I replaced the o.r.p.s. Sad

Sounds like the matrix. It is a full dash and centre console out job, you need to be inside to do it as it will likely take 2 days to complete.
Skills wise, its pretty easy, if you are confident with spanners. Just dozens of 10mm bolts and screws really, once the dash is out of the car its all there right in front of you, nothing complicated really. When you remove the steering wheel, the centre pad is held in place with 4 Torx screws, fitted from the back: get a small mirror and its just a bit fiddly getting to the screw heads, they are angled outwards. Slacken off the centre nut (wheel nut brace is the right size), then rock the wheel off, it will fly off and smack you in the mush if you remove the nut!
I'll look for my pictures from when I did mine and send them you if I can...in all honesty its just a matter of undoing bolts and a few nuts, until its loose  Shocked

I've tried adding the google chrome extension, the image where my pics are has changed, but when I click on the tiny image, I get an error message...can't even see my own pictures  Evil or Very Mad
Time to sack Photobucket, its a proper pain to use now, so many adverts, and I'm not paying them a large monthly fee!

I think there's a product that you can put into the cooling system that will clear a blockage in the matrix.
Worth a try.

Hi ethian, I have asked trooper dan if he cane source a new heater core. I can get a second hand one over here, but thought that a new one may last a bit longer.Although my experience of getting Chinese spare parts is not a good one. Spring is coming here soon so I am not in any sort of pannick, thankfully.
