|
|
I bought the Bighorn very much as an offroad tool but with some onroad comfort in mind as I'd had a Daihatsu before which was surprisingly good in the rough but not too comfortable on the tarmac.
I thought I'd try it out standard first to better judge what mods I'd need before going ahead.
First time out was a waste of time on road tyres and so I added some Colway MTs.
These are a revelation and, now I've tried it out a few times, I realise it doesn't need much more other than a small lift, a bit of underbody protection and some jack points that's it really - you'd be surprised (if you've never tried it) what it'll do and these pics don't really show how difficult the terrain is that I'm driving so I'm chuffed with it all in all.
I'll post more pics as it gets more mods.
Mods so far:
MT tyres
Removal of side steps
Better protector plate under transfer box and auto gearbox
Planned further mods (for now):
Front/rear Hi-Lift points
Sill protectors/rocksliders
Suspension lift
Mods to the front for better wheel articulation
My Mate's looking a bit apprehensive at the start
It's actually leaning quite a bit here and sliding sideways towards a potential rollover but we got away with it ok
Troopers have brilliant rear articulation as standard
Another Mate loves his Chevy but, you'll notice, it ain't the Troop' with the bonnet up!
Back home for a bit of a wash after a brilliant, fun day with no damage done even though I'd driven EVERYWHERE that all the Landies (modified or not) did and even pulled two of them out of the mire.
And, it'll take a family of four with enough camping gear for a small platoon and a boat for a holiday in Scotland, no probs.
Launching the boat into a Loch

Thanks, guys.
I am dead chuffed with how good it is in standard trim (apart from the tyres, that is) and, with a bit of judicious tinkering it'll be brilliant.
On one extremely difficult trail I once had to get out the hi-lift and get myself out of a bit of a hole but I got through under my own steam in the end.
There was a bloke with a very well sorted Landie (lifted, big wheels etc.) having a bit of a scoff but he later had to retire with a broken diff. so nuff said, really. I finished the trail, he didn't. I'm not having a go at Land Rovers though, they're great (weak axles notwithstanding) but so are Troopers and I love to be different from the rest of the pack.
This Trooper is going to evolve and it'll be interesting so watch this space. _________________ 1994 BIGHORN 3.1TD LOTUS

They were taken at a local quarry and on the shores of Loch Fyne near Otter Ferry (Argyle) where you can camp for nowt right at the waterside as there's no-one around for miles. _________________ 1994 BIGHORN 3.1TD LOTUS

That looks like a lotta fun (if you like mudplugging, that is ) I like the old, square Troopers a lot - I nearly bought one too but happened upon a Bighorn seller who was desperate for money and accepted my daft offer. _________________ 1994 BIGHORN 3.1TD LOTUS

|
|
I know loads of green lanes now (easy and hard) and am going to start organising some days/weekends out this summer as I've got loads of mates who're up for it - especially weekend trips camping out.
Mostly the trails are in Derbyshire and Wales but a couple of us (the ones with the best recovery kit) are recceing loads more this spring.
If anyone is interested in joining in just let me know.
I'll post more details around March after researching more trails.
Some pics below of Welsh trails done in my Daihatsu and Delica.

Some really good pics there. Crocket, I'm definitely up for some green laning, don't get out half as much as I'd like to. Live Sth Manchester, so Derbyshire & Wales is my usual hunting ground anyway. When you've done your recceing ( ), let us know. Some really good lanes around Bala, and LLangollen / Wrexham area. _________________

Excellent! Glad you're happy with 'em. They are nice steps but I would've only ruined them eventually anyway. _________________ 1994 BIGHORN 3.1TD LOTUS
