Hi, Just to confirm.......the sticky states 10w-40 for transfer box and gearbox, but manual says 5w-30. I have loads of semi 10w-40 so that would be great, but also would rather put in exactly what it should have. I know the 5w-30 will perform better in the cold in engines, but is there any difference between the two oils in the gearbox?? |

10W-40 is FINE for gear box - the reason the 5W-30 is NEEDED in the 3.0l Diesel is because it uses the engine-oil for the hydraulically-operated Fuel-Injectors. To get things 'right' for an easy start-up - everything needs to be right and the wrong oil can make life 'too difficult' for the Injectors! _________________ 2002 LWB Trooper 3.0L
I've done some major repairs, including replacing half-shaft, replacing fuel-injectors etc. |

|
|
Hello!
I am new at the forum.
I just bought an Isuzu Bighorn 3.1 td (4JG2 engine) 1998. It is RHD vehicle. I bought it from an "old" Englishman, which enjoys his pension in Slovenia for a couple of years now
I red the Isuzu owner`s manual and it says that I should use 10W 30 oil. At the beginning of this topic the author says 10W40.
In the book is also written, that I should change it every 5000 km. Is this true ? Because usally the oil has to be changed every 15 000 km or sth like that.
I could not find out if the oil should be synthetic or semi-synthetic?
Which brand do you recommend. I was thinking about Castrol.
I am going to Africa to Budapest Bamako rally next year and I have an intention to learn to do such stuff by myself due to the fact, that I will obviously have to change oil 3 times before I got back to Slovenia
I am new at this and a little bit lost.
Thank you for your answers,
regrads,
Dardaj, the "small" Giant |

Hi, new to this and found it very useful (as I'm not much of a mechanic), especially Rhanagar's advice! I have a 3.0L diesel 2003 Trooper which has had a few problems. The latest is when I take it out of 4wd it seems to take an age for the light to go out and there is a very loud clunk from the rear when it eventually does. I am thinking it is maybe the oil/fluid or whatever is running low? There is a level plug at the back of the middle of the rear axle, is this the fill point? Now, what oil does it take? I have, as suggested, jacked up both rear wheels and when I turn the rear passenger wheel, this turns the other wheel in the same direction but when I turn the drivers side wheel, the other does not move!!! Any help much appreciated. |

Limited slip diff, and if one wheel spins you lose drive so the diff locks itself to try and give you drive |

I'll be getting the Auto Box ( TOD ) oil changed in the next week or so.
Got hold of a new OEM filer for £15.,and that's about £30 cheaper than the dealer price. |

5W30 is fine for the 3.1. It might be a bit thin so expect some of the older seals to weep a little, and the pressure gauge to be a bit low on tick over.
10W40 semi synth tends to be cheaper as well for future reference.
The 3.0 uses 5W30 Fully synth exclusively for the various electrical gubbins to get the right reading. _________________ 1990 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Mk.I 2.8TD Manual Lotus Edition

I understood that the 3.1 TD (4JG2) has 2 oil filters, are both the same type or different?
I want to change the oil but I would like to know if I have to buy one or two oil filters |
