Ok

This question is asked many times and I thought it would be useful to place a post describing what you need and quantities.

First thing is first. You have to get the following information:

1) What engine are you running.
2) What gearbox do you have (manual or automatic)
3) Do you have a rear LSD (G80 code on the VIN plate on the bulkhead, or better test is to jack up both rear wheels. If you turn one and the other turns in the same direction i.e. both forwards, you have rear LSD)

Armed with this knowledge you need the following depending on what you have:

Diesels:
2.8 TD (4JB1) : 10W/40 Semi-synthetic. 4.7 Litres
3.1 TD (4JG2) : 10W/40 Semi-synthetic. 6.0 Litres
3.0 TD (4JX1) : 5W/30 Synthetic. 7.0 Litres

Petrols
2.6 (4ZE1) : 10W/40 Semi-synthetic. 4 Litres
3.2 V6 (6VD1) : 5W/30 Synthetic. 5.4 Litres
3.5 V6 (6VE1) : 5W/30 Synthetic. 4.7 Litres

Gearbox:
Manual : 10W/40 Semi-synthetic Engine Oil. 3 Litres approx
Automatic : Dexron III Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). 8.6 Litres
Transfer Case : 10W/40 Semi-synthetic Engine Oil. 1.5 Litres
TOD (Torque On Demand) Transfer Case : Dexron III Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). 1.9 Litres

Front differential:
All models : 80W/90 Gear Oil. 1.5 Litres

Rear Differential:
No LSD : 80W/90 Gear Oil. 3 Litres (You can use LSD gear oil but it costs more)
LSD : LS80W/90 LSD Gear Oil. 3 Litres (Note: LSD oil has an additive in that protects the LSD mechanism. Without it premature damage will occur)
Note this is an estimate. You may need a little more, or less depending on how much drains out.

SOTF Front Axle Actuator : 80W/90 Gear Oil. 250cc . This is a guess as I never really measured it when I did it about 2 years ago on a friends truck.

The 2.8 and 3.1 both have one oil filter. They are different depending on the filter mount.
The 2.8 fitted to the Trooper has the filter mounted on the top (Blueprint part number ADZ92103)
The 2.8 fitted to the Vauxhall Frontera and all 3.1's has the filter pointing downwards (Blueprint part number ADZ92108)

The 3.0 has two filters. A main one (Blueprint part number ADZ92112) and a bypass filter (Blueprint part number ADZ92113)

The 3.2 and 3.5 V6 petrols use the same single filter (Blueprint part number ADS72101)

To fill/flush the autobox care of Grandad

Grandad wrote:
The following procedure can be used to replace fluid in the majority of auto boxes.

To remove all 8ltrs:
Remove sump gets about 3ltrs, clean filter replace sump and filter.
Top up with about 3ltrs.
Remove one of the hoses from the transmission oil cooler so it drains into a bucket.
Get another person to start the engine oil will come out of the hose.
While engine is running keep pouring oil in through the dipstick.
When it runs clear red stop engine.
Top up transmission fluid, run through the gears, check and then top up.
The above procedure can be used to flush the box using Dexron II then drained and finally filled with Dexron III.

Notes:

One thing to avoid a calamity is to undo the fill plug before the drain plug. Nothing worse than have an empty gearbox, and no means to fill it again.

The gearbox fill plugs are huge and you can get a lot of force onto them. They only need to be nipped up to stop leaks. Don't over tighten them or you will strip the threads.

If I have made a mistake then please someone point it out and I will correct it. Some of it I had to look up and the sources may be wrong.

My 1996 3.1Td needed 7 liters of oil to bring it near the MAX level!

When draing the oil from sump I did jack up the drivers side and loads more oil gushed out though.

And a 15w/40 semi-synthetic diesel oil would be fine as well.

Top post Neil  Cool

Could I just add................... I don't know about any of the other Mk2/3/4 models, but the 3.0DT rear diff capacity is 3 litres, and takes about 2.5 litres for an oil change.

HI, I am replacing the oil in my 3L manual diesel 2001 Trooper. I have read that fully synthetic is best but not realising this I have bought 5w-30 semi synthetic. Can I still use this or am I better off sending it back and getting fully synthetic. I should mention that I have just put the engine back together after replacing the seals and the injectors.

You can but it doesn't cope with the extreme pressures as well as the fully so it needs changing more often than a fully would.

Thank you. Putting the oil in is one of the last steps before we turn the key and see if she works! So hopefully we can get her on the road again :s

I'm getting confused!!! It's time for an oil and filter change on my 3.2 petrol again and there's a lot of conflicting info out there on the grade of oil required. Kwik fit did my last oil and filter change and used 10w40, after checking the receipt I phoned them back to quiz them as I had read on here that 5w30 is the correct grade - they confirmed that 10w40 was the recommended oil on their IT System. Halfords agree with Rhanagar BUT just prior to writing this I was checking out the prices of oil on Milners 4x4 and and they're selling 10w40 for the 3.2 petrol!!!

I obviously believed the info on this site over Kwik Fit but you'd have thought Milners would get it right Rolling Eyes

5w30 for the 3.2, millers are not very good at getting info right with troopers from my experience.
