Got a mate looking for info re a 2001 Frontera 2.2 dti (before buying). Anyone got experience of this motor and able to offer any pointers I can pass on? He's had a Ford Ranger and a Range Rover so slowly heading in the right direction _________________ Eric

I think (don't hold me to it) that the only bad engine in the frontie was the 2.5 so should be ok, Just do all usual checks.
They do need a regular service though _________________

The pre 2003 models have a vacumn operated egr system which unless the engine is used properly just cokes up the unlet manifold butterflies with *beep* - however when these engines are driven right and serviced they are very good
The basic trucks are Isuzu bodies with VX badges anyways -
Running gear is the same as the trooper SOTF etc
Very roomy in the back with large boot space on the LWB -
Accessories still available from fleabay -
pre wired for spots and fogs etc - higher spec models can have all the gadgets too like oil level , screen wash level etc
Heated washer jets wiring is standard just need to by the jets and loom
cheers

Don't ever ever ever let the tank run dry. The pump on these are very temperamental when the run out of fuel. The seals bust and you might be looking at a new pump. The earlier 2.2 Dti's are a pain and you cannot repair them. They are a sealed unit type of affair and as such you can only replace. Prices range from £500-£1000 depending on the type of pump you have.
If you do run dry then you have to bleed them manually ... NOT by cranking the engine like you would do on the 2.8 and 3.1. The pump needs the diesel to lubricate things.
I thought the diffs and gearbox were GM as opposed to Isuzu when they fitted the GM engines in them Steve ... everything works the same ... just different.
Other than that they are basically Isuzu as Greasemonkey says. _________________ 1990 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Mk.I 2.8TD Manual Lotus Edition

Thanks very much for the info guys, will pass it all on. I can help out on the chassis / running gear inspection etc but know nothing about these engines. Cheers. _________________ Eric

In honesty the engine is great. The right amount of power and good fuel economy. They just need maintenance and that fuel pump watching. _________________ 1990 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Mk.I 2.8TD Manual Lotus Edition
