Hi all,

I'm in the market for my first 4x4, I have around £1500 to spend. I've narrowed my choice down to the 3.1 Trooper due to the reports of good reliability.

This will be used as a second vehicle for camping trips and throwing the mountain bikes in, green laning and some pay and play days.

The only thing that is stopping me from going out and having a look at some is I don't know which one to get - would 3/4 mountain bikes fit in the back of the SWB version or will I need to go for the LWB? It's hard to judge from photos on eebuygum etc.

Also, is there a buyers guide or list of points what to look for?

Thanks!

I'm in Doncaster so not too far away, what do you have?

Thought I was onto a winner with one on eebuygum but googling the name of the garage brought up lots of horror stories, one to avoid I think! There doesn't seem to be all that many about to be honest.

Hello and welcome to the club . I would suggest the LWB and do not hesitate to take Trooperdan up on his offer !!  The man is a diamond . Worth his weight in gold . Look no further .

You'll get mountain bikes in a LWB with the seats folded down. I can't imagine they'd go in a SWB tbh. Either that or get a shortie and a trailer to chuck the bikes and gear in Smile

I think I have one of each in at moment. In varying degrees of readyness. I'm in Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning if you want to pop up and have a drive

Thanks all for the feedback, looks like the LWB version is the one to go for. I was a bit hesitant that they would be too big for off road use but a few hours looking at YouTube videos and photos on here has proved otherwise. Cool

Could you PM / email me some more details on your LWB please Dan along with a price that you have in mind? I'm reluctant to get one with any issues as to be honest I'm not very mechanically minded (heard these are simple to work on though so perhaps it's a good place to learn!), but more importantly I just want to be able to wake up on a Saturday, chuck the bikes in and head off for the weekend with no worries. I do appreciate that most of these are approaching 20 years old though so aren't going to be perfect.

Cheers.

Had 4 mountain bikes in back of a lwb with seats folded. Front wheels off and bars slackened to turn straight, all stood up with no prob.

Lwb fine off road can't say I got stuck anymore then a swb would've done.

9 times out of 10 it'll probably me and a pal, or me and 2 pals so could get away with the 2 seats folded down. Guess I'll get a better idea of space available when I actually see one.  Smile

If anything like what we do, 2 vehicles and 6 people. 4 bikes and a passenger with me and the other bikes on a carrier on car with everyone else in car.
