I got to the stage where we had decided to sell the Bighorn and unfortunately whilst on the M25 the car lost power and gave our white smoke! and was dead. It does seem as though it has lost compression but the engine will turn over on the pulley so maybe the cam belt is OK.

The vehicle is a swb 1991 Bighorn Irmscher. Mileage approx 80K miles.

Questions I have are
1) is this likely to be a head gasket, i.e. is the white smoke water???
2) if so what would be a fair price for a rebuild/new gasket?
3) is there any reason this would have happened?
4) am I better off trying to find another engine to fit?
5) should I sell as is for someone else to fix?

I have to say that whilst I like the car I had made my mind up to sell it so once repaired will probebly offer again for sale.

Thanks for any replies
Murph

Hello murph,
when the headgasket goes you do have white smoke from the water entering the combustion chamber (if the gasket goes across a water way!). I would say that if you lost power then probably the cambelt snapped or teeth ripped off belt. Because the vehicle lost power and widdles over very fast then you have probably bent valves. All you can do at this stage is remove timing belt covers and realign timing marks. If the marks are out of align, it may be easier to put on a new belt before removing head.(cambelt very easy to fit)
hope this helps.
