Right We have a boat in the family that was my parents and now has moved into the ownership of Debi's parents (Mk1 Freeman 22) My step-father thought he had the batteries set up with a split charge system but from what i can see today it wasn't at all. I'll pop a few pic's on to see if i'm on the right thinking here.
Boat Battery
The earth cable is a good bit thicker than the positive and goes directly to the engine and to the isolator switch. Positive cable goes directly to the isolator switch.
The main feed for the live's come's from the engine
As does the main feed for the earths
So the positive from the battery feed goes nowhere but the isolator switch which when connected basically puts live to earth.
When isolated only earth feed from the battery goes to the engine.
My conclusion is as it is a 1960's boat it must be a positive earth system?
Right what i want is at night time to be able to run one battery for the 12v system in the boat without flattening the engine battery, I isolated the switch and off a second battery put live to live and earth to earth on the back of the isolator and NOTHING HAPPENED but if i swap wires live to earth and earth to live on the back of the switch hey presto 12v to the boat with no sparks or bangs.
If i connect these this way permanently and put an extra isolator on the positive wire from engine battery to isolator will this isolate that battery (it has to surely)
The bit i do not like as i don't understand it is, When i flick the main isolator again both wires are crossed so will the auxhillory battery still charge off the alt or will it end up in a ball of flames ???????
I am quite confident with modern 12v systems but this has got me head ******
Any help would be very much appreciated, I just hope someone can understand my post because i'm struggling to
If you need any more pic's or info just ask _________________
I am going to leave this here for now but Ted has given me food for thought so i might have my wires crossed metaphorically speaking i'll get back to you all tomorrow sometime on this one, It may well afterall be a standard system _________________
This didn't help Watch for a bit of bad language (under my breath) and heavy breathing, Boat has a make do cover on (hood being repaired) and i couldn't breath properly.
