Small saga here,
Got brought a 01 trooper a few weeks ago brought in after a failed attempt to change a flywheel.
Now it will crank but not start , with a bit of easystart it will run (lumpy) and cut out.
Spent the last few evenings getting all the tricks and checked them all.
Rechecked, and redone the flywheel alignment and timing marks,
Fuses,
Brake bulbs,
White wire trick,
2L of oil,
ORPCV,
Crank sensor,
There are no codes in the system until after the white wire trick, now cleared,
I'm convinced that the timing is off, am I going to get any back up on this, also is there any way to do the timing without taking the head off ???
I'm about to go back out and do something drastic in the shed so any help appreciated.............. |

take the rocker cover off and the timing cover and set the cams to tdc, look on the back of the cams near the bulkhead and there should be a slot like the ford camshafts this needs to be parallel like the fords. it has been know for the gear on the cams to twist as it's only a press fit which then puts the timing out and a non start.
and as the check engine light is flashing it's not seeing cam and crank at the same time for some reason |

Ok so checked the timing using tdc on cylinder 1, its right now..
Still no joy.
Next guess is the flywheel is wrong, should there be 4 marks ?
This has 4, 2 at 12 close and 2 @ 6 apart , and should the timing ring block 3 of those marks ?????
As I said I didn't start this job off.
I have a few pics if that helps but basically the timing ring will only line up to show 1 of the 4 marks
Please help.... |

eh what marks where????
the only mark they have is on the side of the flywheel where the clutch is and its a small half moon cut out just by the ring gear. so with the crank on tdc put this half moon cut out to the 6 o clock position this will then put the cut out in the timing ring thats on the back of the fly wheel to the 1-2 o clock position |

OK so ,
on the reverse side of the flywheel there are timing marks, 2 of them , 2 close together an 2 not so close. I thought that the toothed sprocket that you have to bolt on should not cover the marks, but it does.
As I never saw the original flywheel I'm wondering if the flywheel that was replaced was replaced with the correct one ??? |

no marks on the back of the flywheel that relate to timing it up, what i've done in the past is look through the spy hole covers on the bell housing until you see the halfmoon cutout then tip ex the clutch in line with it. then turn the engine until you can only just see the white line work out where you think it is on the outside of the box then sort of guestimate how far you would have to turn it so the line was straight down then check the crank mark on the pulley. it doesn't matter if your over or under the 6 o clock position a little bit as the bolt holes are spaced so it would still put the crank marks out by a fair bit so at that point you know you got to remove the flywheel |

At this stage it thinks its wrecked.......
Had flywheel off.....AGAIN.,...
Realigned TDC and put the half moon at 6 no joy so moved it on to next position and on again when that didn't work, it only goes on 4 ways as far as I can see, and feel , and it will not fire on any of them.
As the key is turned cranks freely but not even an attempt to fire and again the check engine light flashes three times then stays lit , does that give any indication on what it could be ?
I'm nearly at the stage of burning it now as I've tried everything else I can think of,
Any ideas ? |

The flywheel can bolt on in any of 8 positions as that's how many bolts there are holding the flywheel on, where do you get the any of 4 positions from? |

For that from trying to turn it , done by feel only, but that makes sense what with there being 8 bolts and all.
Feel like an *beep* but its been a long few months |

so set it to tdc and the half moon to 6 and bolt it up otherwise it will never start, if it still doesn't start then there is other issues somewhere |
