|
|
Hi
I had an alternator fail yesterday. It was clear from the voltmeter yesterday that I had a problem and I sure did...!
It was the first time the needle has been well down ..almost towards the 8!!! Anyway couldn't re start but it did start when jumped and got back to base.
Batteries are relatively new so I assumed that it was alternator as I checked the dash voltmeter with my multimeter and the readings were the same.
So I ordered up a new replacement alternator (90 amp same alone taken off) which arrived today and I fitted. Had to jump it first time but and as soon as the leads were taken off it showed 13v+ on the dash meter ....so jobs a good one
Least it running on idle for 15 mins to charge batteries and then left it until ready to go home and then when I turned ignition for heat noticed a buzzing sound from the engine, lifted the bonnet to check and the sound is buzzing from the main fuse box on o/s of engine bay.
Have I missed something as dimensionally and electrically the alternator interchanged with the old one |

You brought an alternator off eebuygum didn't you ? And it came with the pulley on all ready to go on probably off ap xx ?
Well so did I and its an ongoing war of the technicians - the buzzing is the blue charge relay going in and out at about 30 times a second due to a diode in the alternator rectifier being wired up in a different way from standard .
They will tell you its your car at fault -I will tell you its the alternator regulator at fault ( on advice fro El Tel )l who knows nearly all about alts .
Best I can do . its not going to do any damage but until the kitchen sinks change the way they make them it will buzz the blue relay at ign on . _________________ 2 New Troopers ! |

Hi Gribble
No it was brand fire new from my local auto electrician and not eBubblegumm. They are a pretty respectable lot that supplied it and did cross reference it. Ordered yesterday and delivered to their unit this am
Have I done anything wrong in terms of direct replacement or can I do anything to sort it?
Thanks in advance |

If the small 2 wire plug fitted in ok no , thats all you can do really . If by chance you had a 1 wire small plug the it just wants a wire from the battery + to the S terminal to make it work
The correct replacement is a Hitachi unit of 90 or 100 amp output . _________________ 2 New Troopers ! |

This is really Odd.
When I bought mine it has had a new alternator on it also, I dont have reciepts or anything but its blatently new. My blue relay Buzzes loud also when the ignition is on.
When I bought mine (Cheap due to Problems it had) I was told that the reason the abs light and Airbag light was on was that they just came on when they fitted the new alternator and Also 2 brand new batteries. Is there any truth in this or have they just fitted a cheap alternator and the warning lights were already on. I have since sorted the airbag light playing with the under seat plug. The buzzing although annoying hasent caused me any issues. I just wish it didnt do it. Sounds like its gonna blow up if im just sat somewhere with the key on. More embarrasing than anything else. |

generally an easy fix if you have the right alt, what type of plug has it got on it? |

This is my Alternator. Very hard to get a decent pic. Also I was wondering if that relay with the red wires is normal or has that been added to make something work? It does not look standard.. Cheers mate.

I fitted a new alternator to 4jx1 Euro-3 today. The connector plug with the two white wires was the same and fitted perfectly but when I switched the ignition on I got the buzz from the engine bay fuse box. The company that supplied the new one said they would have repaired the original but they could not source the correct rectifier and relay.
Other than buy a genuine Isuzu alternator is there anything I can do to stop the buzz?

Yes , the buzzing is the blue changeover relay making and breaking very fast as the output from the rectifier when the alts not rotating is too low to hold the coil in .
Wont do any harm its just annoying .
The Blue relay can be done away with by linking out the terminals in the relay base , not to hard to do but then the cars not standard so it depends on if its yours or a customers .
You could send an old Isuzu unit in for recon or buy a reconditioned unit off AA Poldhams on eebuygum _________________ 2 New Troopers ! |

I have the one that came off, it's the original and obviously never caused the buzzing. You say send it for recon, the people I took it to are a local company that speacialise in starter motors and alternators and they could not get the parts, who would you recommend send it to?
If I bought a recon unit from AA Poldhams would it be the correct one that does not cause the relay to buzz? |

I am understanding correctly - It only buzzes when ignition is on and engine not running? |

Yes or the Battery light would flash at you when the engines running.
I put a AAP alt on the other day which was a recon unit and it was fine but I have had 2 new ones which buzz.
Those are the numbers for your alt if it's a 90 amp one.
I don't know where you could send yours as I don't know where you are but there will be somebody on the internet . _________________ 2 New Troopers ! |
