sounds like it's got a coded key and the aerial around the barrel is broken |

Hard luck!
There's nothing for it though, if the starter-switch is broken, you'll need a replacement - either NEW of from a Junkyard. I'm not familiar with the one on the Trooper - but on some cars, the switches can be replaced and still use the original key-barrel to turn it - saving the hassle of replacing keys etc.
If your car has an Immobilizer, though, it would work from a coil around the barrel [detecting the chip in the key] - which might be specific to the key-code for YOUR car. I'm sorry - I don't have an immobilizer - and I know little about them. _________________ 2002 LWB Trooper 3.0L
I've done some major repairs, including replacing half-shaft, replacing fuel-injectors etc. |

that ring is the aerial that picks up the signal from the key so it needs to be in the right place to read the key |

3.1 does not normally have coded key
how fat is the key
if they have twisted the lot around could be one of the wires at the back
be carefull if its a mess sometimes the steering lock can re engauge
cheers
