|

The 1993 3.1 I just bought takes an age to start, a lot of cranking and peddle pushing and it fires up. I've checked the alt and battery and both are good. The hand primer has been removed and replaced with a rubber bulb type primer, could this be the cause of the long cranking(lack of fuel). There is no smoke on start up and runs fine when going, does not smoke or cut out, will fire up straight away even when left for an hour or two.
Thanks in advance

Forgot to add glow plug light on dash is on all the time, even when driving. _________________ Bighorn 3.1TD SWB (1993), 3" suspension lift, snorkel

The glow-plug-light might be just an electrical fault - but it's got to be fixed, whatever is wrong - as the plugs are important to starting.
The long cranking routine sounds like the fuel is draining back to the tank overnight - most likely 'cos there's AIR getting into the system - quite likely due to perished rubber at your 'temporary' primer. It's best to replace the original type of primer and check all your pipes for rust or leaks at rubber joints etc. _________________ 2002 LWB Trooper 3.0L

I agree with Browndoff here. Looks like the original primer has been replaced as the old one failed, or the previous owner get tired pumping it to overcome air in the system everytime he wanted to start it. I would replace the filter/primer system to start with. Then check all fuel lines to and from the tank and relace if needs be. _________________ 1990 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Mk.I 2.8TD Manual Lotus Edition

Pardon my reminding you of the obvious - but a rotten tank will fill pipes with rusty *beep* and rot the pipes too! It only takes a few tiny holes to let in AIR - so it's likely that you'll have a huge problem with DIRT in ALL parts of the system!! _________________ 2002 LWB Trooper 3.0L

The crud will settle to the bottom overnight. If your careful you can drop the tank without disturbing it too much. If any got dragged into the pipes then you will need to change the filter. That will catch anything that gets drawn up.
Not that bad really. Hope the tank isn't full. _________________ 1990 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Mk.I 2.8TD Manual Lotus Edition

If it is full you may want to drain it using a drill pump (Machine Mart) .. time for a new tank me thinks. _________________ 1990 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Mk.I 2.8TD Manual Lotus Edition

Took the tank out today, not to bad a job, just got the grinder on the bolts. It was full but i've got an old electric fuel pump I keep for just this sort of thing and used that to drain most of the tank. I'll drain the rest and run it through a filter when I get time.
Thanks

I put the new tank on at the weekend, filled it up with fuel and drip drip drip Drained it again and the tank back off and found this
A small crack in the face of the sender on the inside of where the seal goes. Sealed it all up, put it all back together and then sealed around the outside so hopefully this has now cured it. _________________ Bighorn 3.1TD SWB (1993), 3" suspension lift, snorkel
