Just as I  thought . Ok as the ign was on the glowplugs had timed out so no heat on an indirect engine non start,so you turn back the key give it heat and it goes .
How's that sit lol

Good try Gribble but I am quite fussy about turning the ignition off when not needed, so once the window was down I turned the ignition off again. I turned it on again a couple of minutes later to wind the window up again followed by turning it off again. An hour or so then passed before the failed attempt at starting.

When I was a young driver (about 74 years ago) I was told that leaving the ignition switched on would burn out the ignition coils. I have no idea if that was true but from that day I have never left it switched on longer than necessary, even though I have run diesel for 20 years!! Embarassed

Gary.

Harr!  That teach me lol ,but I think it was  a  glowplug related issue as nothing else would fit the bill unless you have an Isuzu anti theft system fitted ? Red led at 3 o' clock by the wheel in the dash.

Yes I agree, a glow plug issue due to the slightly dis-charged batteries.
The second go must have brought them up to temperature and away she went.
Also, I have an after market immobiliser that sometimes takes a few seconds to de-activate which gives the glow plugs a chance to cool off a little.
Reckon I/we might just have to settle for that as the official answer.
Thanks to all for your suggestions as to the cause of this puzzle.
Gary.
