Right, got both strainers off. The short one had all sorts in it, including what look like plastic lugs off the top of the dipstick and some sort of thin plastic film! The rubber seals at the top of them don't look standard, can I buy these in Halfords, Euro Car Parts etc? The long one has a more substantial bracket. The short one looks like it been welded before where the pipe joins the filter and where the bracket joins the pipe but it could just be where it was manufactured. Also, the fact that the sump was well sealed with instant gasket means someone's been in there before! I'd like to upload a pic but can't work out how to!!  Confused

Upload it to photo bucket or similar and do a link to it,

Could the film have been reducing the flow and it started to suck through the seal?

I would get a new strainer and some new seals from a dealer the seals are only a couple of quid and you know it's right then.

Far too techy for me!! I suppose it's possible the muck in the end could've caused a loss of suction but I think you're probably right in saying get a new one. Do I need both or just the short one. What does the longer one do?

longer one is for engine lubrication and is also known to crack and suck air

So that one won't interfere with engine start up and I don't need to replace that one, only the short one? Just replace the rubber seal?

Right, I'm really hacked off with this now. As posted before, did the extra 2 litres check and it did fire up. Didn't leave it running very long with all that oil in it but it started all the same. So took the strainers out, the injector one was full of *beep*. Took the strainer and said *beep* with me to the Dealers to get oil seals. They had a look and agreed the issue was most likely all the *beep* in the strainer and the that the strainer seemed in good nick. Fitted it all back together and hey presto....... nothing. Turned and turned and turned beautifully, obviously the batteries are good, but wouldn't not fire up. So why did it fire up when I added the extra oil?? So are we looking at ORPS??? I've found the white, or yellow, wire but don't want to snip it. Tried pushing the contact out but it doesn't seem to want to come out. Also, it's full of oil in there for some odd reason.
Please help  Crying or Very sad

I'm going cracked weld on the  short strainer or not cranked over enough to fill the hpop tank on this.

Hi Gribble, I turned it over a lot with no joy. The weld looked good on the strainer. Can you elaborate on the other suggestion?

The oil runs back when the strainers off so the pump has to pick up the oil thepump it up to the hpop tank, the upside down filter thing on top of it.
When the systems full and primed starting is easy but once it's opened lots of cranking may be needed.how long in total have you wound it over ?
Put two litres extra on again ,if it fires well you know where to look.

Turned it over for quite a while. It coughed once briefly but that was it. Sorry Gribble, upside down filter thing on what?
