Well if any one has come across this problem I would be glad for some advice. I have the 3ltr trooper, with the 4jx1 engine, turbo diesel. I have fitted new glow plugs and a new ORPS, also changed both oil filters today and fill it up with fully synth 5/30 oil. From one of the posts, it read that it would take a lot of cranking to start up with both filters being changed.I got fed up with cranking for fear of burning out the starter motor. With a very short tow, about 20 feet she fired up and goes a treat. There allways has been a slight blue smoke when I make her work hard but nothing else I can see.Any advice please? Thanks.

Hi Eithan, my post was probably a bit misleading. The car will only start with a cold engine with a short tow.Once it has run for just a few mins, it will start with the ignition key.? It does smoke a little, I just woundered if this was to do with the problem. The car runs well, once I can get it started in the morning with a tow.Any ideas please.

Sounds like it's a speed of cranking over issue. The 3.0 needs a good spin over to fire up like 200 rpm and it's normally due to a poor or weak battery.

Thanks Gribble, I will check the batteries, they were purchased this march and they are 95amph, perhaps they need a charge.

Thanks Gribble, I have checked the batteries.I have 12.9 volts on both batteries, They are 12v  91ah  740a. This doesent mean much to me , but I think they should be ok?What do you think?

It could be if it's only registering some of the rpm on cranking but all of them during the tow due to the higher speed

Batteries are fine at that have you got any way of measuring how fast the crank pulleys turning when cranking ?

Glowplugs and circuit  all ok ?

When you tow start does it the moment you pop the clutch and run clean of white smoke a bit ?

Glowplug circuits easy ,swap the two black relays in the box nearest the brake servo .If the car wont  crank over the glow relays had it .

Well! I have a development. This morning I could not get a tow, so just kept cranking it over and It started!! It did smoke a bit. Blue smoke and smelt a bit of smoke and diesel. After running for 5 mins as usual off I went to work.????. I shall try swapping over the 2 black relays as you suggested, which will be tomorrow morning when she has stood all night.I suspect it may be running a bit rich after the new orps was fitted. But still cant find a tech 2 out here so it will have to wait.
