On way home last night the bloody water pump snapped on its main shaft. Just before it stalled I notice a cloud of what appeared to be brown to black smoke, the heater gauge was not showing anywhere near the half mark let alone up in the red. Problem is when I try to start the truck now clouds of white to blue smoke appears for about 10 seconds and a small misfire is evident during this period but after that time the engine ticks over and revs no problem. I am thinking that maybe I have blown a head gasket and the moment I put a new water pump on and it starts to do its job pumping water around the cylinder head its going to be feeding water in through the part of the gasket that's blown and then it will smoke all the time. Is this going to be the case or I am hoping that maybe some un-burt diesel was sucked into the system just before it stalled and what I see now is just the burning off of the diesel in the exhaust or something... I think that when I get the new water pump I am going to have me bad thoughts confirmed. No water in the engine oil, checked that, no chocolate looking foam on the oil filler cap. If its a head gasket job can this be done without the need for re-timing the pump? would I have to take off the timing belt? any advice would be grateful or have I answered my own questions? _________________ Isuzu Duty Trooper 1993 Tdi LWB. |

the 3.1 was prone for dropping the fan in to the rad and then doing the head gasket around cylinder 4, it's not as bullet proof as people make out lol. it's a push rod engine so no need to disturb the belt or pump timing when doing the gasket |

Well got a new water pump, viscous fan, belts and a radiator....and fired her up...tad little smoke at first then everything went clear....running sweet as a nut. In fact I would say better than before but maybe I am just imagining it. Anyway no water in the oil and no water getting in the bores from any broken or blown head gasket, no overheating so it looks like I got away with it on this one without blowing out the head gasket....thank the lord. praise be the lord...amen...you get all religious when you don't have to take the head off lol. _________________ Isuzu Duty Trooper 1993 Tdi LWB. |

Maybe just a bad glowplug or something causing the smoke?
Mine does what you describe if you start it without giving it the full glow time now that its got colder. |
