I have swapped my 2004 Trooper stereo (VDO) for a Pioneer unit. I fitted it using the plugs installed and the stereo works with the ignition on but will not hold any presets when the ignition is off. The dash clock has remained working. I didn't disconnect the batteries when I was removing the old stereo and fitting the new Pioneer unit so is it possible that I have blown a fuse while doing it? I assumed the permanent live feed was common with the clock so the fuse was be ok. If it's not a fuse, any suggestions please? |

The stereo should have both a yellow and red wire on one of the plugs. One should be permanent feed to let it remember all your preset radio stations. The other is usually ignition live to allow you to switch it on. I tend to wire them both to permanent live so I can listen with the truck switched off. _________________ 1990 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Mk.I 2.8TD Manual Lotus Edition

On many radios the harness has the live feeds (switched and permanent) on bullet connectors - The reason for this is that some cars have the feeds the 'wrong way round' on the ISO connector - Split the bullets - AFTER checking the colour of the wires you're swapping in the radio's manual - Swap them over, see what happens; but please note I'm talking ONLY about the two live feeds here... Leave the earth, speakers, etc where they are... |

Oh! - And the clock ISN'T the best place to get the permanent live...
The fact that the clock still runs tells you that you haven't blown the fuse; but - general rule of thumb - clocks are low current devices, which means they'll often have a light fuse and light wiring... Stereos can draw an AWFUL lot of current! So you can be 'straining' that light wiring... Not true for every car of course but as a general rule of thumb...
Best way to do this is trace the wiring with a multimeter... A very cheap one is fine. Failing that, rig up a test bulb...

Assuming you're NOT tapping into the existing wiring, the best thing to do is run a permanent feed to the batter, fused AT the battery end... Pick up your switched feed from something like the cigarette lighter (if switched; check with your test bulb) |

Yeah I think it's the same as my Frontera, the permanent and switched lives need swapping. _________________ Every time I learn something new, it pushes some old stuff from out of my brain.

I've just re-read the original post...
If you've simply 'plugged in' to the original harness just pop the radio out, swap the yellow/red wires over at the bullet connectors ( the unit's installation instructions may well mention this) and all should be well methinks. - five minute job. |
