Seem to remember a post a while ago where gribble says a 125a alt will fit on a troop, is that right or have I just made that up? Don't think my alt keeps up very well when winching and I'm considering fitting a turbo controller to the winch so will a bigger alt be a benefit or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Cheers.

Your not wrong Pete I did post that . The only limit on alts is if you have a 3.1 you need  the vac pump for the brakes .

Transit smiley front one at 95 amp is an easy fit or an transit ice cream van one at 145 amp as both have the pumps on .
Some of the later Astra diesels have alts over 100 amps.

The good winch turbo controller is a very popular mod and fitting a bigger alt with it a good way to go as well.

When you have the alt I can do you a wiring pic if you need it .

Excellent, still got a 3.0 (for my sins!!) so vac pump isn't an issue. Cool I'll have a look around and see what sizes are available then give you a shout about the wiring once I've got one if that's ok. Thanks Mr G.

Just thinking, dangerous I know, would it be possible to fit a tractor alt? 150-200a ones seem fairly popular or is that going to be overkill?

Not really as redwinch.com are offering 200 and 300 amp ones but the limit there is the belts.
They use serpentine belts.

Just check the small plug as some have an ecu terminal but it can be got round depending on the make.

Ok, I'll have a look into that then. Try and pop in to the local agri dealer this afternoon if I get chance.

Good question, I'll check the dims, suppose I could mount it where the aircon bracket is if more space was needed.

While we're on the subject of alternators, do I have to remove the aircon pump to change the alternator on a 3.1 Bighorn?

Nope, but it makes it a hell of a lot easier.

You can take the belts off, and undo the mounting bolts. If you whip the battery out, then you can swing the A/C compressor onto the battery tray out of the way without having to lose all the A/C gas.

No problem. You might have to undo the battery to engine earth as well thinking about it. It is a chunky wire that bolts to the top of the engine next to the A/C compressor and thermostat housing.

Hi,
regarding the alternative alternators, is the "Transit" one from  a particular model ie. series or engine type ?

I have a 3.1 Big'orn and see a Transit alt on flea-of-the-bay site that states "2.5Di model" - and it has the vac pump.

1999- 2000 Turbo Transit was the easiest one to do but any of them from that age will work .

You want the one with 2 wires in the small plug not one with 3 wires  or the fan outside .
