I know there's only a few members I can aim this at so...
background.
got in the truck this morning went to the local tip shut it off, unloaded, saw a better spot (ment I didn't have as far to carry stuff)
re-started, moved, shut down finished unloading, went to start and,.... click,.... each turn of the key same result, click... gave the starter and solenoid a thwak with the jack handle while the tip man worked the key... still nothing. so the nice men at the tip gave me a push to the ramp, as soon as speed up 2nd gear pop the cluch and away it went. I live on a hill/ gradient so when I got home shut it off, went to restart,..click.
I should mention the tip I was at was a 50 miles away from home so had enough time to recharge a dead battery.(which I don't think this is) put the meter on it and its 14.4v
I will take the starter motor off at the weekend to check it but other than that...
I'm open to suggestions guys... neal were are you buddy? |

New starter ... should be the same as the 3.1 which is fortunate.
They can be stripped, cleaned and reassembled. Did that to the one on the Mk.II. Was stuck in a field. Took it off (don't know why people winge and moan like a bunch of pansies saying it is impossible without airguns and ramps and specialist tools), stripped/cleaned/reassembled it. Slapped it back on and works a treat. Was gunk and *beep* stopping the bushes hitting the stator. _________________ 1990 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Mk.I 2.8TD Manual Lotus Edition

i found putting a couple of long extensions together and undo from underneath helped when the bolts were tight on my old 1. |

hi lenny, been underneath it today and managed to get the starter off, an yea, a long extension and some extra leverage on the ratchet handle did the job.
stripped it all down boy what a mess in there. I think its shot to be honest, but got it back together and back on the truck......it wanted to turn over but
the battery seemed like it hadn't got the energy?
maybe time for a new battery, despite what I said earlier
at least I know the starter is clean inside, but while under there I noticed the crank seal has gone and also the steering pump input shaft seal... the joys of owning a mk1 |

When I did mine I tested it off a known good battery off the car. _________________ 1990 Isuzu Bighorn LWB Mk.I 2.8TD Manual Lotus Edition

Ok Nick & Neil!
Is the starter the same as my 3.0?
Mine has a problem with the pinion shaft clutch, its letting go about once every 5 hits, so don't want to fit it as its a cow to do due to access and 3.0 junk getting in the way
Do you know if parts are available? If its the same as the Mk1 there's a chance... _________________ 1999 3.0 TD Duty SWB

Update!
Firstly, the (starter) clutch sub-assembly is available as a seperate part, our Chinese brothers supply them, I've got a trade account with a Chinese wholesaler, and they sell single units for about US$ 10....bulk orders as low as US$2 each! How they do this is beyond belief, doubt the quality is the same as Hitachi though....
I've soaked mine in brake cleaner for a while, and its now working perfectly, just gave it a quick dose of spray grease, seems perfect _________________ 1999 3.0 TD Duty SWB
